Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. It is located in Wiltshire, England, and was built thousands of years ago during the early Bronze Age. The monument consists of a ring of large standing stones, each around 4 meters high. These stones are arranged in a circular layout.
Archaeologists believe that Stonehenge was constructed in several stages, starting around almost 5000 years ago. The purpose of Stonehenge is still a mystery, but many experts think it may have been used for religious ceremonies, burials, or as an ancient calendar. The way the stones align with the sunrise on the summer solstice suggests that the builders understood astronomy.
Some of the stones came from over 150 miles away in Wales, which shows the builders went to great effort to transport and position them. This has led many people to wonder how such a large and complex structure could have been built without modern tools or machinery.
Today, Stonehenge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts visitors from all over the world. You can visit the Visitor Centre to buy some souvenirs and learn more about its history.
When we arrived at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre, we were excited to begin our visit. We got on one of the shuttle buses that took us from the visitor centre to the Stonehenge itself. The ride was short, and soon we could see the famous stones in the distance.
Once we got there, we walked around Stonehenge a few times to see it from different angles. It was really fascinating to see the huge stones up close. We also took plenty of photos to remember our visit. Even though there were other tourists around, it wasn't too crowded, so we could walk comfortably and enjoy the atmosphere.
After spending some time at the Stonehenge, we took the bus back to the Visitor Centre. There, we explored a reconstruction of a Neolithic village. It was interesting to see how people might have lived when Stonehenge was built. It was interesting to imagine how people lived thousands of years ago.
Overall, it was a great experience. We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and even learned a bit from history.
