Modern sculpture is a form of visual art that involves creating three-dimensional objects or forms.
It is the art of shaping and manipulating materials such as metal, wood, plaster cloth or various found objects to create physical artworks that occupy space. Sculpture encompasses a wide range of techniques, styles, and materials, allowing artists to express their creativity.
It is highly recommended that students who are considering Art Creative Practice in VCE have undertaken a 3D arts elective such as Sculpture.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What do you study in Modern Sculpture?
Students will be encouraged to experiment with and investigate the properties of a variety of materials and mediums in order to create three dimensional artworks to express a narrative or concept. As sculpture occupies space in much the same way as we occupy space, we can identify with sculpture in different ways. Unlike painting, which traditionally represents an illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface, sculpture actually inhabits the space shared by the viewer. Sculpture is also tactile and dynamic, potentially changing over time. You will study contemporary sculptors and be inspired by their designs and techniques to create your own artwork. Year 9 Modern Sculpture, will introduce you to a range of traditional and contemporary sculpting techniques and materials. You will potentially experiment with clay, wire, found objects and plaster cloth. You'll have the opportunity to experiment with various mediums and push the boundaries of where sculpture can take you!
What sort of students should choose this study?
Students who enjoy creating artworks and transforming them from a two dimensional design to the three dimensional object will enjoy Modern Sculpture. In order to create sculptures, students will work towards an understanding of three dimensional structures, symmetry and balance. Modern Sculpture will encourage a deeper thought process and the development of ideas, assisting students within their other subject areas such as maths, as many of the skills are transferable.
What VCE studies can this elective lead to?
If you have an interest in pursuing creative arts in senior school, the experience and skills developed in Modern Sculpture will be highly beneficial. Art electives lead directly into VCD and Creative Practice. It is strongly encouraged but not essential to take Modern Sculpture in conjunction with Art or ArtWear in 9 or 10 to prepare for VCE Creative Practice and VCD.
What sort of careers can develop from this study?
One of the reasons sculpture was introduced into the curriculum was to give students a practical understanding of three-dimensional forms which they had otherwise struggled to visualise in the study of mathematical theory. Sculpture provides students the opportunity to experiment with the properties of different materials. They are encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials to construct, carve and model forms. Future career paths would relate to work requiring the manipulation of materials such as: Architect, Jeweller, Industrial Design, Product Design, Sculptor, Set Design, Exhibition Designer.
Course Description
In Modern Sculpture students will imagine, design and realise 3-dimensional artworks. Students explore the various materials and techniques used to create sculptures and urban art installations. Students will build skills in modelling, casting, carving and assemblange with a range of materials which may include wood, plaster, wire, clay and papier-mâché.
Year 9 Modern Sculpture, will introduce students to a range of traditional and contemporary sculpting techniques and materials.
