In Drama: Curtain Call, students learn about a range of different acting styles from all over the world and are given the opportunity to; write and perform their own scripts, interpret and perform professional scripts. The semester focuses on students’ abilities to manipulate their use of acting skills (use of voice, facial expression, gesture and movement) to creatively and realistically take on a range of characters. Throughout the two terms students will work together in pairs and small groups to create stage-ready performances that utilise costume, stage lighting, sound design and makeup to create professional work

If you love all things film industry – auditioning for movies/tv, highly believable acting, listening to direction, and performing on screen – then Drama: Lights, Camera, Action is the right arts subject for you!
In Drama: Lights, Camera, Action, students learn about how to perform to a screen, rather than on stage, and are given the opportunity to; interpret and perform professional scripts. The semester focuses on student’s abilities to manipulate their use of acting skills (use of voice, facial expression, gesture and movement) to naturalistically perform believable characters in a range of genres (from comedy, to drama, to action). Throughout the two terms, students will work together in pairs and small groups to create cast-ready audition tapes and impactful performances that utilise cameras, lighting and microphones to create professional work.

What do we study in Drama?
Drama teaches you key skills around building self confidence, presentation skills (like public speaking) and collaborative groups work skills. You will learn to refine your acting skills and techniques to present a character as authentically as possible. You will work with other students through workshops and performances that allow you to communicate as an actor. You will be able to build on acting skills by developing skills in accents, facial expressions and different forms of movement. Drama classes are predominantly practical but will include some theory work in order to assist improvement in acting and performance.
What is the difference between Curtain Call and Lights Camera Action?
While both subjects will build on students skills in Drama and acting, each subject focuses on more specific areas.
Curtain Call has a focus on acting on stage. Students will learn and hone their skills on presenting live performances, such as using projection, memorising scripts, and bringing the emotion and motivation of the character in real time on stage.
Lights, Camera, Action! has a focus on acting in front of the camera for television and film. Students will learn and hone their skills on more close up, subtle facial expressions to communicate character to a camera (not a live audience).
Do I need to be an amazing actor to do Drama?
No! There is so much more to drama than acting. You can focus on directing or the use of production areas (lights, makeup, costume, set design). Although every student will have to do some acting and performance in drama, the focus is on building skills rather than being the best actor already.
What types of students should choose this elective?
Drama benefits students of all backgrounds and interests. To study Drama means to figure out what it means to be 'human'. Drama is great for students who want to:
- Build on social skills such as public speaking and leadership skills.
- Build on self confidence and challenging yourself.
- Develop acting, character and performance skills.
- Use their voice and body to communicate unique, creative and expressive ideas.
- Learn about the backstage aspects of Drama, such as lighting and sound.
- Develop creative thinking and problem thinking skills
What VCE studies does this subject lead to?
Both Drama subjects Curtain Call and Lights, Camera Action! are building blocks for VCE Drama. However, studying Drama has strong links to other subjects as well, such and English, PE, Art, Music, Media, Psychology and even Legal Studies. Drama will help you to be more aware of how your physical presentation can affect the way people see you. This becomes increasingly important after school as well, for instances like job interviews and public speaking.
What sorts of careers can this study lead to?
The more obvious jobs studying Drama leads to would be in theatre, film and media. However, in more depth, possible careers can include scriptwriting, costume design, makeup artistry, prop and set building, directing, lighting and sound designers, and even special effects artists.
The communication skills that are the focus of both Yr 9 Drama electives are transferable to all aspects of the modern workforce. Areas such as marketing, public relations and advertising require effective and persuasive communication. Many students studying Law also study drama too. Famous actors like Rebel Wilson, Gerard Butler, John Cleese and Shaun Micallef all studied Law and Drama, and pursued careers in acting. The confidence you gain through developing your presentation skills will transfer to most roles in the work force and the wider community.
