(aka Visual Communication Design)
You can take VCD as a 3 period elective in Year 9, as a 5 period elective in Year 10 and then as a VCE subject in Year 11 and Year 12. The areas of study are broad, covering many areas from Graphic Design and Illustration to Architecture, Fashion and Industrial Design, Web Design and Animation.
In each year level, you will have the opportunity to complete folio work in a specialised design area of your choice as well as completing design pieces common to all students.
Students from VCD progress into many different university courses ranging from Design and Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Fashion, Communications, Business, Advertising & Fine Arts.
What kinds of design work will we create?
Students could create a range of different finished designs including; architectural models and floorplans, advertising posters, logos, branding, packaging design and fashion concepts to name a few. The finished products will be split between manual and digital techniques, with students now having the possibility of exploring 3D printing and laser cutting for design applications.
What are some of the skills and techniques we will learn?
Students will be exposed to range of different skills such as; 2D and 3D drawing methods to represent ideas, using the design process to solve complex problems, design for effective layout and presentation, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to prepare and present final ideas and creating foam core architectural models.
What types of students should choose this elective?
Anyone who has enjoyed Art and Design electives in Years 7, 8 or 9 would also enjoy Visual Communication Design. Students who are considering a career in any area of design should take VCD because we learn about the different fields of design and gain a greater understanding of design in industry and how to approach and solve design problems. You should also study VCD if you enjoy experimenting with new ideas and devising creative solutions.
What sorts of careers can this study lead to?
Visual Communication, Industrial Design, Architecture, Spatial Design, Multimedia, Collaborative Design, Web Design, Animation and Fashion Design are all university degree courses, which may lead directly to professional employment as an Architect, Graphic Designer, Fashion Designer, Typographer, Illustrator, Industrial Designer, Web Designer or App Designer.
Some art and design courses at university require a folio and interview for entrance. This folio should be a range of your best work, things that you feel demonstrate your interests and skills. You may include work that you have produced at any time. As a result you may want to include some of your year Senior VCD work in your folio.
