Why Choose Visual Communication Design?
Are you into design, drawing, and solving real-world problems in creative ways? In Year 10 Visual Communication Design (VCD), you’ll level up your skills in everything from model making and freehand sketching to digital design using programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and SketchUp.
You’ll learn how to think like a designer—coming up with ideas, creating solutions, and presenting your work just like a pro. Whether it’s designing a building, a product, a brand logo, or even an app, you’ll take on design briefs that challenge you to work both independently and in teams, just like in the real world.
Through hands-on projects in four key areas—Architecture (Environments), Product Design (Objects), Graphic Design (Messages) and App & UX Design (Experiences)—you’ll explore how design impacts everyday life.
This course is all about creativity, clever thinking, and communication. If you like turning ideas into visuals, using tech creatively, or dream of a career in design, advertising, architecture or gaming—VCD is where it all begins.
Where will this course lead me at GWSC?
Year 10 Visual Communication and Design prepares students for the year-long year 11 course which follows a similar project-based format. By undertaking year 10 VCD students are better equipped with the skills and language needed to pursue the subject in VCE, or other creative subjects such as Digital Art.
How does Visual Communication and Design benefit VCE & beyond?
Visual Communication and Design is offered in VCE as an subject. The practical and creative thinking skills that you learn in year 9 & 10 will contribute to the success in VCE as they provide a simplified scope of the major topics assessed in Units 1-4 . VCD can be a stepping stone to courses and careers in Graphic Design, Product Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Multimedia and Fashion Design at some universities, which may lead directly to professional employment within those industries.
What do you study in VCD?
Students undertake a range of creative problem solving task from the three fields of design; Environmental Design (architecture), Industrial Design (products, objects & inventions), & Communication Design (posters, logos, print media).
What could I design?
Students in Year 10 have created a range of different finished designs including; architectural models and digital environments, advertising posters, logos, branding, and packaging design. The finished products will be split between manual and digital techniques, with students now having the possibility of exploring 3D printing & digital cutting for design applications.
They are always looking to other designers, trends, styles and the world around them to inspire their designs and challenge their creative processes.
