Why Choose Art?
In this subject, you’ll get to explore your creativity and build a folio of original artworks using different techniques like illustration, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and painting. You’ll develop your skills through hands-on activities, including drawing from real life – especially figure drawing – which will help you improve your observation and technique.
You’ll also discover how to shape your own unique style by experimenting with materials and learning how artists of the 20th Century broke the rules, made statements, and changed the way we see art. Through short research and analysis tasks, you’ll uncover the why behind different art movements and how they still influence today’s styles.
Projects are designed to guide you but leave plenty of room for personal ideas and self-expression – so you can create artwork that’s truly yours.
If you’re someone who enjoys being creative, expressing ideas visually, or thinking outside the box, Art is the perfect subject for you.
What do we study in Art?
Ways of expressing yourself using visual means. You learn to communicate your ideas about how you feel in an individual style. You observe the ‘natural world” and learn the skills you need to reproduce and respond to what you see. You will refine your drawing skills and learn to effectively use a range of mediums, such as pencil, pastel, gouache, marker, and water colour. Canvas painting will be a major focus of this study.
What skills and techniques will we learn?
Art introduces you to many of the skills and techniques you will need if you want to improve the artworks you create. For instance; how to render drawings effectively, how to mix skin tones with paint and trial different brushstrokes to create painting effects. You will use a variety of materials such as paint, pencils, charcoal, lino printing and collage. You will also look at styles of art made by people living in different times. In year 10 there is the opportunity to explore easel painting using acrylic paints on canvas as well as other techniques
What types of students should choose this elective?
Students who enjoy the creation of art objects. If you draw pictures in the margins of your exercise books and draw a picture to explain an idea rather than talk about it then you will enjoy Art. Art can be an important means for students to express their identity and worldview. The drawing and illustration skills gained through Art would compliment studies of VCD or Media.
What VCE studies does this subject lead to?
If you have an interest in pursuing and visual arts in senior school then the experience and skills learnt in Year 10 Art will be beneficial. Art electives usually lead directly into VCE Art: Creative Practice, but the skills developed would also be transferable to other VCE studies such as Visual Communication Design (VCD). It is strongly encouraged but not essential to take Illustration in 9 or Art in 10 to prepare for VCE.
What sorts of careers can this study lead to?
There are a range of university degree courses in Fine Arts which may lead directly to professional employment as an Artist, Curator, Illustrator, Art Writer, Exhibition Designer, Art Conservationist or Stylist.
Many art and design courses at university require a folio and interview for entrance. This folio should be a range of your best work, that you feel best demonstrates your interests and skills. You may include work that you have produced at any time. As a result you may want to include some of your year 10 Art in your folio.
