Students with no prior background in Spanish will be introduced to Spanish conversations and beginning grammatical structures. Equal emphasis will be given to listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Customs of the local Spanish-speaking community will be introduced. This course is not designed for students who speak Spanish at home.
This course is the continuation of Spanish 1. At this level, students will be expected to apply previous knowledge in a number of listening, speaking, reading, and written activities. Great focus will be placed on oral communication as well as in more abstract grammatical concepts. In addition, students may be introduced to abridged masterpieces of Spanish literature.
Students with two years of Spanish will continue to learn through listening and speaking with greater emphasis put on reading and writing. Students will read modern and classical literature and do basic writing through summaries, letters, and short essays. Grammar will focus on a general review of previously learned tenses and a strong introduction to the subjunctive mood. Literature taught will include important cultural aspects.
Prerequisites: Ability to understand spoken Spanish and/or completed Spanish III with a C- or better.
This course will prepare Spanish speakers for Spanish for Speakers II and AP classes in a number of reading, writing and oral activities. Nevertheless, the focus of this course will be placed on grammatical concepts and the analysis and interpretation of short stories and classic pieces of Spanish and Latin-American literature.
Prerequisites: Complete Spanish for Speakers I with a C- or better or teacher recommendation.
This course will prepare Spanish native speakers for AP classes in a number of reading, writing and oral activities. Nevertheless, the focus of this course will be placed on grammatical concepts and the analysis and interpretation of short stories and classic pieces of Spanish and Latin-American literature.
Prerequisites: Completed Spanish III with a C or better, Spanish for Speakers I with a C or better, or Spanish for Speakers II with a C or better.
Building on a prior knowledge of Spanish, this course develops the students’ ability to understand others and express themselves accurately, coherently, and fluently in Spanish. This course will further build improvement in all areas (i.e., pronunciation, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, and oral communication) to prepare for the AP Spanish Language & Culture exam. The students will develop an extensive vocabulary to understand literary texts, magazine/newspaper articles, films, video clips, and television productions on various themes and contexts as presented on the AP exam.

Prerequisites: Completed Spanish for speakers 2 with a C or better.
The AP Spanish Literature class is a study of Peninsular and Latin American Literature from the medieval period to contemporary trends and will prepare the student for the AP Spanish Literature exam in the Spring. The course has five general objectives: students should (1) learn the major literary movements, writers, trends, and ideas that have shaped Spanish and Latino people; (2) learn modern literary theory and its application in literary analysis; (3) think critically and logically; (4) practice speaking and writing Spanish; and (5) appreciate the arts as both aesthetic artifacts and sources for knowledge. The course is comparable to a third-year Spanish college course emphasizing literary analysis. Students who take an AP course may receive college credit. Students are expected to perform academically at a level similar to that required at the college level. Therefore, candidates must be highly motivated and committed to achieving. The class will be conducted entirely in Spanish, and students are expected to use only Spanish in the classroom.
