Yearbook Club is hard at work capturing the special events and sweet moments of this school year. The committee is currently working on a marketing strategy to increase this year's yearbook sales! Mr. Martin who is also a sponsor of Yearbook Club has been working with some of our members on photography skills and the members are loving it! We look forward to capturing and preserving the memories of the 2019-2020 school year.
"8th grader and a published author? You heard right. Mr. Robinson and Ms. Marlow's ELA classes are working on writing a WHOLE BOOK based on the experiences of the students! Each student is writing one chapter, and once it's done, a copy of the collection, The School on Jarboe St, will be available in Mr. Robinson and Ms. Marlow's class library for current students and future students to learn about the lives of our 8th graders and what it felt like to be here in this school, in this city, in Fall 2019. If you run into one of our many 8th grade writers in the hall, make sure to ask for an autograph!"
Student Council has been busy to start the year. We hosted our September First Friday Bash which was a huge hit! Students had so much fun! We are working now on the First Friday Bash for October as well as our week long United Way Fundraiser. Be on the lookout for spirit day information, snacks at lunch and information on our annual walkathon!
I can write an article on what is happening in English with read To Kill a Mockingbird and how racism has impacted the life of the characters and our students. We focus on the challenges of living in a world where people are held back by characteristics that we can not control. This will really be hit hard next week (Oct 7-12).
Girls on the Run We are so excited to offer Girls on the Run during both the fall and spring semesters this year! Coaches Ms. Nielsen and Mrs. Mais have eight awesome girls in the club this year. We meet after school on Thursdays and have a quick lesson about one of the aspects of being healthy (i.e., physical, emotional, social) followed by warm-up exercises and running. The girls are building up their endurance to be able to run the KC Girls on the Run 5K on November 9th at Swope Park!
Video Game Club is off to a great start with 37 members this year, and has recently welcomed Mr. DeLeon as a co-sponsor! We've had a lot of fun playing new games and old across several platforms. One club member I would like to shout out is Bryan Cuellar-Castor for bringing in his PS4 and sharing his games with other students!
Board games club has returned with an excitement to learn some new games. Recently, our new member Hugo Soberanes defeated Mr. Velasquez in a heated game of chess. He has been to tournaments and tested his skills with other players. He is constantly thinking about what the best strategy would be. A popular game this year in club is Coup and both Gabriel Aguilar and Alahi Garcia are skilled players who request to play that game every week.
Soccer has been very exciting this year. The soccer team is 2-0, with two victories over competitive teams. The Aztec defense has been awesome with only one goal given up. Playoffs are around the corner with expectations for winning our third title in four years. Hope everybody can make it out to see the Aztecs compete for the championship.
Pay it forward. It's a great saying to remember. When so much has been given to us, it's always a good thing to extend that same love and care to others. This year, GCMS Athletics has made an intentional effort to give back to its community. This year, all of the GCMS sports teams will have volunteered at Harvesters, a regional food bank serving 26-county areas in northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Great job, Aztecs!
