The basketball season has started with a great amount of opportunities for the team to learn about adversity, accountability, and hard work. Many players are finding a new level of desire to perform at their best, both on the court and in the classroom. The coaches are seeing improvement on a day to day basis and they liking how the team is starting to understand the concept of being a teammate. As the first of the season comes to an end, the boys basketball team is looking go on a run and trend upward. The players' hard work is paying off and a stronger character is being built in each one of them.
Art club for the past 3 weeks have been working on using acrylic painting on canvases. This has been a lot of fun, and even though there are a lot of new 6th graders in the club, they have really dedicated and super talented painters!
This month the students have really enjoyed playing a new card game called Slaps. It relies on quick reflexes and a good memory. I introduced a few weeks ago but since then, that students have requested that we play it. New games next semester will be ready to go!
I would like to congratulate the following 6th grade students for their high achievement in ELA as is evident on CFA-2 test: Guadalupe Alvarez, Alfredo Avalos, Ximena Barraza, Alyna Castillo, Karly Castillo, Arturo Damian, Ethen Farias, Daneida Guillen, Caleb Hernandez, Carlos Juarez, Eileen Laguna, Juan Lugo, Kirra Marquez, Christofer Morales, Christopher Padilla, Valerie Parra, Donald Robinson, and Erick Sanchez. They all received BLUE tickets!
This past month in science class we have been studying satellites. In class we have been doing lots of stations activities to really get the students engaged and support them at their own level. We've learned about the phases of the moon and why it appears to change shapes in the sky, used lasers to study the transmission of light and the importance of utilizing light energy in space, played with slinkies to show the transfer of energy through waves, and currently we are building our own satellite prototypes that minimize the transfer of thermal energy in space. The students have been working really hard through all the information that this unit has thrown at them and I'm excited to see their final products!
I am so proud of my 7th graders! They showed so much growth from fall to winter testing! Over the last couple of months we have been focused on earth science. When we come back from break it will be all life science! Get ready for some cells!
GCMS enjoyed another First Friday Bash hosted by Student Council! GCMS students could attend for $1 and receive a FREE cup of hot cocoa by wearing a Christmas sweater! There were tons of fun activities such as music, dancing, ornament decorating, basketball, a Christmas photo booth, snacks, PIZZA, and did we mention pizza!?! Thank you to Student Council for hosting our amazing First Friday Bashes! Stay tuned until the next Bash in January!
Recently students learned about convection through an experiment and how it applies to Earth's climate. Convection alone applies to many other scientific principles, if they master the idea, it will serve them well. Soon, we will be recreating the effects greenhouse gases have on our atmosphere by building miniature greenhouses. This is one of the most important lessons they will learn in science. Within a few years, these students will be of voting age and should be armed with scientific evidence as they use their voices.
The girls basketball team is already halfway through their season, with only 4 regular-season games remaining. All the student-athletes have been working hard and learning a lot, both on and off the court. A big should-out to our captains Magy Yepez and Mazhia Thomas for their leadership and encouragement! Coaches Thomas and Nielsen look forward to helping the girls continue to grow and improve through the remainder of the season. Let's Go Aztecs!!!
8th grade ELA is completing a unit on the Holocaust to wrap up our second quarter. Over the past nine weeks, students have stared straight into the face of evil, questioning how atrocities like the Holocaust originate, as well as the morality and ethics behind the German citizen's neutral complicity in such crimes. All of this will culminate in a "Museum Walk" between Ms. Marlow and Mr. Robinson's classes, where student groups will share their individual research on various aspects of the unit, including survivor stories, camp logistics, and how extremism manifests!
We’ve been working super hard in improving our overall fitness. From going outside in the cold to run, running stairs, and playing soccer indoors. We make sure to drink lots and lots of water. Big shoutout to Isaac Dominguez and Wilson Celedon for being great leaders!
