How much water have you had to drink today? If you are like most people, it probably is not enough. It can be difficult during the cold of winter to remember to stay hydrated. Even though you might not be sweating as much as you would during the summer, you still need plenty of water to support your body’s daily functions.
According to Healthykids.gov, kids your age should have 8-10 glasses. Eight glasses of water is equivalent to a half-gallon or about the same as 2 liters. It is important to hydrate all day long not just drinking all your water at once. To do this, try to drink a 16 oz (which is slightly larger than a can of coke) of water every three hours during the day. Sipping on water all day helps get your water in too. Drinking large amounts of water at one time does not provide your body enough time to efficiently use the water, but it will quickly fill your bladder, meaning more trips to the bathroom (you know teachers LOVE that) but not really helping your body in the ways it truly needs the water.
As like any other time of the year, make sure to drink extra water after sports and exercise. This will help to replace the water lost due to sweat, help you regulate body temperature, and help prevent you from becoming dehydrated. Mild dehydration can lead to being very tired, headaches, and constipation (when you have not pooped for 3 days or your poop is hard...I know GROSS!) while more severe dehydration can be life- threatening.
Water is the only fluid your body needs for survival. Fruit juices, sports drinks, flavored milks and soft drinks are full of extra sugars that can lead to unnecessary weight gain and obesity. Childhood obesity is a growing problem and it is largely due to unhealthy choices when it comes to nutrition. Not only can drinking water help you maintain a healthy weight, it can also help you save money. Bringing in from home a reusable clear water bottle filled with water every morning and refilling it from the water fountain is a lot cheaper than purchasing other drinks, and you can express your individuality with the bottle and decorations you choose for it. Fun and healthy for you, and good for the environment. Make sure it’s a CLEAR bottle!
Drinking water is an important part of living healthy. We all know that we need to be more active, and being well-hydrated is a big part of that. Your body will run more efficiently, you will be able to stay more focused because you are not as tired, and you will have more energy to play with your friends and family. What are you waiting for? Go finish that bottle of water!
Student Council got the opportunity this year to help lead the Guadalupe Education Systems Board Meeting in January. The students presented on data about test scores, BIST movements, attendance and more. The board really appreciated seeing the students invested in this information and were impressed by their confidence in presenting! Way to represent our school!
Since coming back from winter break, 6th Grade Social Studies has been covering Ancient Greece! Students have been hard at work learning about the Greek city-states, warfare, and Alexander the Great. As the unit winds down, students are very excited to begin our Greek God project, which will begin right after our test. I would like to give shoutouts to Fernanda Rodriguez and Donald Robinson. Both are fantastic students to have in class and always work their hardest!
In ELA-6, students have been working on tough concepts such as Rhetorical Appeal and Elements of an Argument. Everyone has worked really hard and most students have made a noticeable progress in higher order thinking and problem-solving. Hurray to 6th grade!
January began our classes adventures in cooking. This year we are stepping things up and each student becomes the chef for one of the recipes we've chosen. A lot of planning and hard work goes into preparing themselves to be ready to be the leader in the class room and being in charge of delivering a dish the whole class can be proud of. Last month we focused on appetizers and the class delivered BIG. February will be focused on lunch and breakfast items. It's awesome to sit back and watch my students flourish in their skills as culinary artist!
Our class just finished up our unit on the U.S. Constitution. We are now studying the early parts of the 1800’s. The students are currently working on important U.S. Supreme Court rulings Marbury vs. Madison and Maryland vs. Mcculloch. Next topic of study will be Lewis and Clark. I would like to shout out our student of the Month Ashley Ramos who always has positive intentions and is a wonderful student in class.
Student just finished their Fitness Unit and they all rocked it!! This unit is by far the hardest unit they will do all year. Especially since most of our students have never done organized exercises. For the past few weeks, students complained of being "sore" and I had to remind them that that is a good feeling. Also, it lets me know that I am doing my job. I love how I got feedback from students on how after they have P.E. during this unit, they seem less rowdy and able to pay attention. This is always a nice feeling because then student are able to learn in the classroom while burning calories at the same time.
The boys basketball team had their final game on Tuesday, January 28, as they fell to the Lincoln Preparatory Academy in the Metro League playoffs. As the lesson came to an end, 7th grader Dilan Guterriez had a great perspective when talking about the season with Mr. Morris. Mr. Morris spoke to Dilan after the last game and reminded the young man that there is no win or losing, just winning or learning. Dilan responded to the statement with, "Well, Mister, we have done a lot of learning this year." This response was the attitude that the coaches love to hear. Not only was the team encouraged by the progress they made in the season, but many of them, including Dilan, are wanting to work hard to prepare for next season. Later that evening Dilan went on to tell Coach VandeNoord that, "Next year, we are going to win a lot from what we learned."
The 2019-20 Girls Basketball season has come to a close. We played seven exciting games this year and, while we didn't capture a win, we had some close games and always had fun! Coaches Nielsen and Thomas are especially proud of how hard our student athletes worked to improve their skills. Our Aztecs always displayed the highest level of integrity, both on and off the court. Congratulations on a job well done, Aztecs!
The eighth graders continue their journey around the world, and their current stop is the continent South America. From the world’s longest mountain range, to the Amazon River and the sparsely populated region of Patagonia, these students are getting a taste of the rich physical geography and culture of the continent. These young geographers are also investigating topics such as the Venezuela crisis and the deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest. The students are analyzing the impact these events have on the nationals and what the governments of these countries are doing to address these international issues.
Recently we gained a new member. 8th grade Ben Morales has been showing up ready to learn new games. He usually figures out games pretty quickly and enjoys the friendly competition.
In January we were not able to do much until the very end of the month. We came back with lots of energy and ready to get fit. We have played football and basketball since coming back from Winter Break. Basketball has been the most exciting sport to play so far, with great athleticism displayed by Isaac Dominguez and Christian Gonzales. Huge props to both of them!
A BIG Congratulations to OUR AZTEC Dance TEAM for representing us in this weekend’s competition and BRINGING HOME A TROPHY.
