Congratulations to:
This past March GCMS hosted its annual Career Day! This is one of GCMS' biggest and BEST events they host throughout the school year. The theme for this year's Career Day was "Vision 2020-A Vision to My Future." The mission and intent of Career Day was to lead students closer to their vision they have in mind for themselves by introducing and exposing them to a variety of careers is several different fields of work. Several different speakers and representatives of jobs were present at the 2020 GCMS Career Day such as: Nurses, Engineers, Detectives, Lawyers, Musicians, Chefs, Educators, Firefighters, Photographers, Physical Therapists, and SO many more! Students had the opportunity to pick six different 30-minute sessions they would like to attend where they would hear from a specific speaker and be able to ask questions and even see certain demonstrations of their job. To say Career Day 2020 was a success would be an understatement as the eyes of the GCMS students were left wide gazing into their futures after seeing the possible opportunities!
We got spirit yes we do, we got spirit, how 'bout you?! This past week GCMS teachers and students could participate in Spirit Week from their very own homes! All who participated could take a picture and send it in to be featured on the GCMS Instagram and Facebook pages! Check out our school spirit!
Art club was working hard on giant paintings! Our paintings were 2 foot by 3 foot wide! Tons of fun in art club!
Be on the look out for a virtual art show next week!
Just before Spring Break, 6th grade Social Studies was learning all about Genghis Khan and Mongolian culture as they prepared for their field trip. They worked to trace the life of Genghis Khan, experienced Mongolian culture, and even learned about Buddhist Tsam dances. It was really cool to see it all come together when we went to the exhibit. As a unit we don't typically get to cover in 6th grade, it was a lot of fun to teach something new and something that students got to experience with their own eyes.
Even in the time of crisis and social distancing, we are still connected through our electronic classrooms. To keep up our good humor, we are reading The Phantom Tollbooth--a satirical novel full of wisdom of life. This is an excellent opportunity for us to practice independent learning skills and find our hidden strengths. Even during the spring break, some students were submitting work on Google Classroom. Special thanks for hard work go to Kelvin Mendoza, Yaretzy Serna, and Thalia Olivera. I love and miss my 6-graders very much. --Ms. Enneking
Who would have believed that we would leave for Spring Break and then be stuck in it for the foreseeable future? It is like the combination of an amazing extended vacation and the new experience of learning from home (and teaching from home). The students are getting to experience school in an exciting new way that gives them awesome responsibilities and opportunities to learn from their homes. In English Class, this will give us the ability to engage reading and communication in new and powerful ways. As the semester continues, we will be trying out new ways to show our learning with videos, podcasts, and interactive websites like IXL and Read Theory from home. The teachers are excited for what is to come this semester, but at the same time, all of the staff misses getting to hang out and interact with the students. We all can't wait to see you again!
In March, 7th graders learned all about ecosystems and adaptation in science class. We talked about adaptations of sea stars that help them survive in their environment. We also had the opportunity to see these adaptations up close during our sea star dissection!
