Each year GCMS celebrates the beautiful Hispanic heritage with an assembly! This year, Student Council along with Mrs. Meyer led the assembly. GCMS first recognized their amazing kitchen and custodial staff. Next, the dance and cheer team performed. All club members, soccer players, and girls volleyball players were announced and recognized by their coaches and club sponsors. Finally, the assembly finished with two guest speakers who talked about the importance of education and their journey of how they arrived where they are now.
This students have really been enjoying a game called Coup. I have brought it almost every single club meeting. Our own Alahi Garcia is very good at it. She knows all of the rules and how to go for the big win in most games.
Right now art club is preparing for the trunk-or-treat. This year we are in charge of the photo booth and we are hand making the photo props! We are making props, frames, and the face hole pictures. Come visit us at the trunk or treat!
Each year, GCMS raises money to give to United Way, an organization that helps those in need. This year Student Council helped raise A LOT of money by hosting bake/snack sales at lunch, organizing dress up days for students, and last but not least, hosting a Walk-A-Thon!!! Students could pay $5 to go outside for two class periods with their peers to dance, buy snacks, play games, and spend time with their teachers and staff! It was a great week to celebrate United Way!
This year GCMS is actively making a Positive Impact on our Community. Currently we have had 4 sports (Boys Soccer, Cheer, Dance and Volleyball) volunteer at Harvesters. Where they packed food for families all over the Kansas City Area. Not only are our Sport teams making a difference, but our Clubs are right behind them. Currently Girls on the Run, Video Game Club and Yearbook Club volunteered for the KC Marathon. They passed out water, powerade and snacks to over 1K runners. I am very proud of our coaches/sponsors and students because without them we would not be able to make a difference. I can not wait to see what the rest of our sports and clubs will do in the future for those who are need.
Lots has been happening in the GCMS Computer Lab!!! 6th and 7th Grade Computer Applications has been learning how to use the Google apps and tools! First, students learned how to create tables in Google Docs by creating a Top 10 list of their favorite songs, foods, or athletes. Just recently, students finished creating Halloween Stop Motion Animation projects in Google Slides. The winner of this project will be featured on Aztec TV at the end of October! Students are now going to be discovering Google Sheet, and how to organize data, play Battleship, and create Pixel Art!
8th Grade Advanced Computer Applications has been exploring their dream career! Every student has chosen one career that they want to research and explore this year. Students are beginning to create their own resume to use down the road for a mock interview! Looks like GCMS has a lot of future world changers!!!
"Shoutout to the Volleyball on a great season, they have worked so hard and have come a long way. It was amazing to watch them play and how well they lifted each other up and played as a team."
5 word to describe this years volleyball team-United, Hard-working, Positive, Focused, Leaders. This year we had the most girls on the team than ever before. I am so proud of these group of girls. They worked so hard this season on and off the court. Everyone of these girls improved and exceeded my expectations. Hope to see them continue with the sport and maintain the amazing energy they brought this year.
8th grade Math is off to a good start. We have covered numerous topics including fractions, exponents and Scientific Notation. We are currently taking a deep dive into solving equations. Both Ms. Mallott and Ms. Wynne are excited for the rest of the year.
Over the past month in social studies, we've been working hard to learn about the first civilizations of Ancient Mesopotamia! Students recently concluded their second unit and are getting ready to take on a favorite of mine: Ancient Egypt. We will be learning all about Egyptian gods and the unique burial process of Egyptian mummification as we finish out the month of October. I want to shout out two stellar students who always work hard and scored exceptionally well on their CFAs: Lizbeth Caballero and Valerie Parra. Keep up the amazing work ladies!
The month of October has been a busy one for Video Game Club! As more students have joined, more and more games such as Brawlhalla and Jump Force have been appearing on our screens. Students have also been forging friendships through multi-player games such as Cuphead and Mario Kart. As we move forward, we are looking forward to branching out into a bigger space and growing as a club. A student I would like to shout out this month is Jesus Tucker Saldana for always being supportive and bringing so much energy to our club.
The GCMS Dance Team has been busy at work. We are proud of our Aztec Superstars who shine not only on the stage but also behind closed doors. This past Saturday these dedicated students took time out of their weekend to help our community food bank at Harvesters. Together with the team sponsors: Ms. Jaramillo and Mrs. Qualles the team packed over 80 boxes of food for the community. Join us at our upcoming Trunk-or Treat Spooktacular where our BOO-tiful Dance Team will be performing Halloween classics such as Thriller and Monster Mash.
7th grade science just finished our unit on atoms, molecules and chemical reactions. 7th graders should now be able to identify chemical reaction and give evidence. Moving forward we are learning about the rock cycle as well as renewable and nonrenewable resources. In November we will be partnering with ELA to write an argumentative essay on fossil fuels and renewable resources. Stay tuned!
STEM Club's Battle of the Brains project has finally come to end. All of our hard work and dedication has finally paid off. We had a great time creating the proposal for our exhibit and filming a commercial to go along with it. Look out for the video on Aztec TV. Now we have to play the waiting game, while we wait for all of the projects to be reviewed and graded by engineers at Burns and McDonnell. We have a really good chance of winning this year!
Please be mindful that it's flu season. This means we need to be careful with spreading of germs to prevent the spread of influenza and other illnesses. Ways we can do this is to: WASHING HANDS frequently, NOT SHARING FOOD, and drink plenty of water, getting a good nights sleep and MOST IMPORTANTLY GET YOUR FLU VACCINE!
The fall Girls on the Run season is quickly coming to a close! We had a great time doing community service on Saturday, October 19th handing out water, Poweraid, and bananas at one of the Kansas City Marathon aid stations. The girls will continue to practice after school on Thursdays until our BIG DAY--the Kansas City Girls on the Run 5K at Swope Park on Saturday, November 9th! Coaches Nielsen and Mais are SO PROUD of the hard work and dedication our girls have put into their training over the past months. Go Aztecs!
Coach Holmes and Coach VandeNoord kicked off the basketball season with a series of open gyms. Nearly 20 boys show up to display their balling skills at the first open gym. The coaches showed a lot of excitement because of what they saw from the participants. "I think that this year will be a real game changer for our boys basketball program. We have a lot of talented players and with some hard work we will be a real contender in the league," said Coach VandeNoord. Tryouts for boys' basketball are the first week of November and it is anticipated to be an excellent experience.
The Boy's soccer team won their final game 5-2 against Frontier. The soccer team captured third place in the KC Metro League. The eight graders shined in our our last playoff game scoring a season high five goals. Luis Flores made two free kick goals from 30 yards out during our final payoff game. Andres Buzani scored a team high seven goals for the season and was one of the league's goal scoring leaders. Thanks for all of the people who came out to support the Aztecs this season!
Fitness Club has been a roller coaster so far. From Basketball, Pickleball, Push-Ups, and Squats. Yep, I just said Squats. Being fit does not only require Sports, or simply exercise, but it must be a combination of both. That is what we have focused on in the Fitness Club. Huge shout out out to Ashlee Espinosa and Guadalupe Alvarez for always showing up ready to go!
This month we have worked really hard on implementing stunting into our cheers and routines. The girls have done a great job staying focused and striving to do better each and every time they attempt something new. We're looking forward to continually improving and showing off all our skills in the upcoming basketball season!
