Here's what GCMS has to say about Nurse Elliot:
Basketball season is officially upon us and we are excited for the things to come. The girls basketball team started off the season by giving back to the community. Shoutout to the ladies who volunteered their time on Saturday, November 16th at Harvesters. In preparation for their first game, the girls basketball team is currently working on team building and basic basketball skills. Please join us, December 3rd at 4:30pm for our first game against Central at Paseo Academy.
StuCo was able to take their very important business meeting to the Roasterie last week! During that meeting we began planning for the support staff assembly on 11/20. We are also working to plan the December First Friday Bash for 12/6 and the Holiday Assembly for 12/20. Stay Tuned!
In the last month of video game club we've moved to a new location thanks to the kindness of Ms. Qualls and Ms. Anderson! Being in a larger space with lots of computers has been a huge benefit to our club. It's been enjoyable playing with students and learning about all the new games they play. I especially want to shout out Bryan Cuellar and Juan Lugo for learning to play online Yu-Gi-Oh! with me. I'm looking forward to many more good times going into the end of 2019!
The boy's basketball team had an amazing turnout for tryouts on November 4-8. Over 35 students came to show their skills on the court in order to make this year's Aztec basketball team. When tryouts ended, 15 boys made the team (12 active players and 3 practice managers). The team has spent the first few practices have focused on conditioning and fundamentals. "The improvement of the players on a day to day basis is impressive and will translate to a great year," said VandeNoord. Please come out and support your Aztecs this year.
The boys basketball team have had some practices and are getting better each day. We are working on individual skills as well as team strategies. They are working hard to get ready for their first game on December 3rd.
Ms. Newman gave 2nd quarter counseling lessons in Social Studies classes. Thank you to Ms. Gilyard, Mr. Acosta, Ms. Dobbins' and Mr. Morris for offering their class time. 8th Grade learned about motivation styles and revisited their goals they set for this year, 7th Grade learned about coping strategies and how to deal with their stress, and 6th Grade learned about positive thoughts and affirmations. Students did great and it was a lot of fun!

Now that Battle of the Brains is finished, there are loads of new fun activities that we have planned for our club. This includes building candy towers or learning the basics to computer programming. We will have some really fun activities planned for the holidays! Also, STEM club is going to be in charge of the new recycling movement at GCMS, so make sure only paper products are going in the blue recycling bins! Now that Battle of the Brains is finished, there are loads of new fun activities that we have planned for our club. We are working hard on learning about circles. 7th Graders are learning about the different parts of circles and how to find the circumference and perimeter. Alan Ortiz has been working really hard in class. He comes to class ready to learn and is always participating in class discussions. He shows true grit by sticking with a problem even when it is hard. Great work Alan!
Social studies has been very fun so far this year. Students have recently finished up writing newspaper articles on the Declaration of Independence. Currently they are creating slideshows of the Battles of the American Revolution. Students will be taking the roll of the teacher and presenting their slideshows to the entire class. Looking forward in the near future on our U.S. Constitution unit.
All aboard! Ms. Gilyard's World Geography class has embarked on a journey around the world, our first stop is the continent of North America. Students in Ms. Gilyard's class will explore the continent's physical and political features. The students will also learn about the cultures and the people who live in the countries of this amazing continent.
