Learning with Technology at Somers Heath

Year 5 Somers Heath Primary School have been working on a project that will teach others about the Mayan Civilisation. The goal of the project was to create a computer game that would teach other children about different aspects of the Mayan Civilisation.

The authenticity of this project was important. So the students had a video conference with a colleague in South Korea who requested them to make a game for his computer game company. His expectations were to create the game, create an advertising video and market the game at an exhibition.

What you see on this page is the work in progress of the learning journey that the students have gone through. On this journey they have learned the following skills:

• Collaboration and team work
• Coding and how to development a product from Scratch
• Failure and understanding that making mistakes is an important element of learning.
• Supporting others learning and how this can reinforce their own understanding as well as help others with theirs.
• Persuasion and the beginnings of understanding how to market a product.
• Video editing on iPads and how to create a video without using a camera.
• Crediting others work.

There were many other skills the students picked up during this project, but the students were all engaged in creating something for a purpose.
