The Sami continue to live the traditional way, even in modern times. Their sewing crafts are amazing and colorful. They used to use reindeer leather, but now use silk and cotton more often for their embroidery. Their work would be quickly sold out in a store! Part of their culture focuses on making items themselves and not just buying things in a store. That's different from most modern cultures, and the Sami have been doing this for 3000 years!

Ancient Viking people were known for traveling long distances in very large boats. They were a military-type society, very strong, and were some of the first people to make armor. Although it appears in TV shows and movies, Vikings didn't wear horned helmets! And they weren't covered in dirt from living in coastal villages. Vikings were known for their excellent hygiene.

There are some interesting accomplishments for Vikings. They used a unique liquid to start fires and buried their dead in boats (not always in a sailing boat on fire!). Their society was complicated. Although they were active in the slave trade, Viking women enjoyed some basic rights that other cultures didn't give to women.

From around A.D. 800 to the eleventh century, a great variety of Scandinavians left their homelands to try to find their fortunes elsewhere. These seafaring warriors were called Vikings or Norsemen (“Northmen”). They started out raiding coastal areas, especially monasteries in the British Isles because they weren't defended very well. Over the years, people came to view Vikings as pirates and raiders, but later as inventors and settlers who spread across a large part of England and Europe as well as moving into Russia, Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland.
