The Nenets have witnessed colonial intrusions which form a major challenge. Furthermore, there is threat of civil war. The socio-cultural globalization has led to environmental degradation which restricts reindeer herding. In Russia, Article 67 guarantees the Rights of Indigenous Minority People.

The use of the Sami languages in schools and public life was forbidden for a long time. In the 20th century, however, the problems of the Sami minority were acknowledged, which led to efforts to maintain its society and community through the usage of Sami in schools and the preservation of reindeer pastures. Now, there are Sami political and cultural communities, as well as a few Sami newspapers and radio programs.
