Forty years after "Operation Exodus," the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior has returned to the Marshall Islands, a region still grappling with the devastating legacy of U.S. nuclear testing.
The islands endured 67 nuclear tests, most notably the catastrophic Castle Bravo test in 1954, which had far-reaching consequences. In 1985, Greenpeace aided in the evacuation of Rongelap Islanders due to radioactive contamination.
Today, the Marshall Islands face a dual crisis: the ongoing threat of nuclear contamination, particularly from the vulnerable Runit Dome, and the escalating impact of climate change, as rising sea levels exacerbate existing nuclear risks.
The Rainbow Warrior's current mission aims to support the Marshallese people's fight for nuclear and climate justice by conducting independent scientific research, amplifying local voices, and traveling to heavily effected locations. The Marshallese people are also actively working to prevent deep sea mining.
