On Wednesday 12th February 2025, we confronted Shell with the devastation from their fossil fuel driven disasters with Breaking Point: Untold Stories of Climate Loss and Damage.
77 activists surrounded Shell’s London headquarters with display cases holding the once-cherished belongings of Filipino communities that were wrecked by typhoons. Then we 💥SMASHED💥 them - this represented our rage and our defiance, the world is at breaking point, 2024 was the hottest year on record and we're seeing unprecedented extreme weather events more and more - meanwhile Shell profited over £19bn whilst continuing to knowingly fuel the climate crisis. Frontline communities are tired of having to be strong and resilient to a crisis they didn't cause. In the words of Paeng, our colleague in the Philippines, "even resilience has a breaking point".
The belongings – which include a sofa, television, shoes and a teddy bear – were flooded with water, to show the damage caused by supercharged typhoons.
Glass was swept into the doorways of Shell, and then we left - leaving the belongings and the brooms behind for Shell to clean up their mess.
This project was CO-CREATED from start to finish between Greenpeace Philippines and Greenpeace UK - it was a really special process and we’re super grateful to have been able to work so closely with our Filipino colleagues.
Three AMAZING friends from the Philippines joined the action - Jeff (GP campaigner), Bill (GP engagement lead), and Bon (community leader from Bohol) - bringing in two of the belongings and placing them onto plinths right at Shell’s doorstep.
Chats for Change - We're building a collective movement rooted in empathy, compassion, and solidarity with climate-impacted communities in the UK and beyond.
