A-G Requirements

What are A-G requirements?

A-G requirements are the courses that students need to take and pass to be eligible to apply to any 4-year California College.

Most High Schools do not require what is needed to apply to colleges to graduate, so it is extremely important that, if you have any interest in applying to a 4-year college right after high-school, you must plan to complete your A-G classes during high school.

Quick Review of A-G

A. History/Social Science - 2+ years including 1 of World, 1 of U.S. and/or Government

B. English - 4 years of college preparatory English

C. Mathematics - 3+ years (4 recommended) of including topics covered in basic and advanced algebra and two-and three-dimensional geometry

D. Laboratory Science - 2+ years (3 recommended) of laboratory science in at least 2 of the 3 disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics

E. Language Other than English - 2+ years (3 recomended) of the same language (other than English)

F. Visual/Performing Arts - 1+ years of visual or performing art, like photography, dance, music, etc.

G. College Preparatory Elective - 1+ years (an additional year of any requirement above or other elective, usually related to your intended college major)

Other Important A-G Considerations

  • To receive “A-G” credit, a high school course must be certified through the UC course approval process. Your high school counselors should be able to let you know which classes qualify.

  • To be considered for admission to a UC or CSU, high school students must take a minimum of 15 UC approved college preparatory classes.

  • Students must earn a “C” grade or better in each A-G course in order for the course to count towards meeting the requirement.

  • To be eligible for admission to a University of California campus, students must also earn a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.0 or better in these courses.

  • D grades can count toward high school graduation requirements, but do not count toward the A-G requirements.

        • If you receive a "D" or "F" grade in an A-G class, you will need to retake it to be able to apply for 4-year colleges
