The Grants Pass Cavemen varsity baseball team is off to a rocky start to the season. So far, they are 2-6 this season and are on a four-game losing streak, although it is early in the season and there is still plenty of time for improvement. The team is led by seniors: Tyler Irelend (P), Luke Morgan (3B), Bruxton Leair (OF), Cole Carnes (INF), and Troy Osborne (C).
Although the overall record may not look too good, the Cavemen are 2-2 in league play, beating South Medford and Roseburg, which is good to help the Caveman's placement in league play. Additionally, in the last game that the Cavemen played, they only lost by one run to Willamette, showing improvement. For their next game, as of April 9, 2024, they play North Medford and, according to Grants Pass senior and baseball player Luke Morgan, it “should be a great game, since they lost to Willamette by a lot more than we did.” In theory, it should be a great game.
Some of the seniors on the baseball team are looking to further expand their baseball careers, like Troy Osborne, for example. Osborne received a full-ride scholarship to play baseball at the University of California: Sacramento State. When asked about his scholarship, Osborne said, “I’m very excited and blessed to be able to further my baseball career at the D1 level, as well as having my education paid for.” Osborne had other offers to go play at different schools but ultimately decided to play baseball there.
This baseball season got off to a rocky start, but there are nearly 20 games for the Cavemen to kick it into gear and come out of this season with a winning record. Also, they could possibly earn a trip to the playoffs if they play their cards right. This will hopefully be an exciting and memorable season for these seniors to remember.
