Recently, a collaboration has emerged that no one saw coming. e.l.f. and Liquid Death have partnered up to release a new makeup set. The kit contains the essentials needed for achieving the ultimate black metal look– corpse paint. According to e.l.f, by using their corpse paint vault, one can “slay the viral corpse paint look.” Despite all this, the makeup set has stirred up some controversy in the black metal community.
One may ask the question: What is corpse paint? Corpse paint involves painting the face and neck white, while making the eyes and mouth black. Most commonly worn by individuals in the black metal community, corpse paint is used to appear un-human or satanic, and is one of the most identifiable items of the black metal subculture. Bands of the early Norwegian black metal scene wore corpse paint excessively. For example, Per “Dead’ Ohlin of Mayhem was one of the first individuals to associate this type of face paint with black metal. According to Mayhem’s bass player, Necrobutcher, “It wasn't anything to do with the way Kiss and Alice Cooper used makeup. Dead actually wanted to look like a corpse. He didn't do it to look cool.”
The new corpse paint vault is displayed in a Reusable Coffin Keepsake Box, which includes the following: Matte Magic Mist & Set, O FACE Satin Lipstick in All Night, No Budge Cream Eyeshadow in Whispy Cloud, H2O Proof Eyeliner Pen, and a Putty Applicator-- although, it’s the commercial that steals the show. The advertisement opens in a girl’s room, with various Norwegian black metal band posters over her bed. It displays the two girls flipping through a magazine, gawking over their black metal ‘idol’ Glothar– who spontaneously jumps out of the magazine. After the three of them apply their corpse paint, the girl’s mother enters the room with a tray of drinks. Glothar and the mother lock eyes, revealing an unlikely coincidence, to which the girl states in disbelief, “Dad?”
Despite the release's popularity, the makeup set has successfully stirred up some controversy in the black metal community. Black metal elitists were especially upset by this, as their underground subculture was becoming mainstream, and being referred to as “the hot new makeup trend.” Many beauty accounts are promoting the product online, and black metal fans are absolutely livid. Aside from them, social media is loving it– considering the kit sold out in less than an hour. No matter how much the metalheads sulk about the release, there is almost no doubt that most of the kits fell into the hands of mainstream personnel.
All in all, the corpse paint makeup kit was a success on e.l.f and Liquid Death’s part– despite the slight controversy it caused. If the “viral corpse paint trend” really is a “trend,” then it will more than likely die down at a fast rate. It could even be over by the time this article is published, and the black metal community would surely be pleased with that.
