In this article, Tessa talks about how nobody ever follows the Met Gala theme.
It is that time of year again: the Met Gala. The time of pretentious people coming together to wear their exorbitant and nonsensical outfits. These preposterous ways of showing off their wealth (while many of us struggle to pay for basic necessities) could be excused and even enjoyed... If only they stuck to the theme. But, of course, what is a better way of feeding one’s superiority complex than breaking all the rules and getting away with it? Let us reflect on some of the most abhorrent outfits of the 2023 Met Gala while preparing for (and possibly avoiding) the horrific cycle taking place once again on May 5.
The theme of the Met Gala in 2023 was, according to Teen Vogue, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, meant to honor the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.” Lagerfeld was a fashion designer who started in the 1950s. In order to follow the theme, one would have to wear clothes he designed, from his brand, or from brands he worked with or wore. Janelle Monáe opted to wear a large, cone-shaped fabric with a giant black and white jacket over the entire ensemble. She then had the jacket removed to reveal that she was half-naked under the jacket, with only the sheer fabric to cover her. When thinking of fashion, one might think of clothes or creative ways of being modest or staying warm. Monáe must have thought that she was heating it up by being half-naked, but she was not. Hopefully, it was not too cold, because her abomination of an “outfit” (if you can even call it that) was not doing anything to cover anything.
Lil Nas X showed up looking like someone straight from the Capitol of Panem. He likely thought he stole the show with his so-called fashion statement, wearing nothing but silver body paint and gems glued to him. Rather than looking stunning, though, he looks more like a silver Crayola crayon that has been left out in the sun too long. His face, covered in silver and white jewels, looks like (as mentioned before) someone from The Hunger Games. It is easy to picture Effie Trinket wearing similar makeup, although even she would snarl in distaste at his lack of clothing.
Continuing the Panem theme, Doja Cat showed up looking similar to Tigris, who had plastic surgery to look like a feline. According to Daily Mail, “Doja Cat transformed into a feline with striking facial prosthetics as she made an unrecognizable turn on the red carpet at the 2023 Met Gala.” This ensemble is quite disappointing, rather than just revolting. The dress itself is not that terrible, but then as your eyes continue up, they inevitably land on her face. Then comes the shock, the terror, and, ultimately, the disappointment. What a waste of clothing materials and a beautiful dress, just to be completed with a cat ear hoodie and facial prosthetics. The last time many of us might have seen a cat ear hoodie was likely in middle school. It seems that Doja Cat is trying to bring back the middle schooler look with her disappointing attire.
Since the 2023 Met Gala was packed full of major fashion fails, one might think it cannot be topped next year. However, we can count on the 2024 Met Gala to be just as terrible as its predecessors.
