In this article, Rylie Revercomb will talk about GPHS Choir's new Senior Showcase.
It’s been a long year for GPHS Choir this year, but it doesn’t seem long enough for our seniors. Newcomers into Choir might think that we do too much. Many seniors, however, are begging for more time in high school, desperately wanting to not have to leave everything behind when they graduate. Mrs. Pulsipher, the GPHS Head Choir Director, has offered up a solution so that the seniors get to leave with a BANG! This year, instead of Choir’s normal cabaret performance, where everyone gets a chance to sing, Pulsipher is offering the seniors a chance to shine in a senior-only cabaret called Senior Showcase. But what is this Senior Showcase, and when is it? Well, dive deep into this article to learn more.
To know about Senior Showcase, first you have to know about what it was previously. The Senior Showcase used to be cabaret, which was a show that the Choir put on at the end of the year with a set theme. Last year, the theme was Blast to the Past, which meant that choirs sang songs like Dancing Queen, We Will Rock You, My Heart Will Go On, and other favorite classic songs. While cabaret is a lot of fun, it is also a hard production to put on. The amount of time the choir teacher has to set up the acts and get everything moving smoothly is only a week and, every year, the GPHS show has been close to disaster. That’s why the new Choir Director, Mrs. Pulsipher decided to change cabaret into a smaller performance called Senior Showcase. When asked why, she said, “I want the seniors to go out with a bang, and I don’t want to rush a show.” So that’s how the Senior Showcase was born.
Plenty of seniors are very excited about this. Some say that they feel like they haven’t had something just for them in Choir before, and that it is nice to get some representation. Others are just excited they still get to do a form of cabaret, just with less stress and more time for planning. Nathaniel Lee, a senior Choir student here at GPHS who is auditioning for the show, said, "I'm auditioning for Senior Showcase on the first. I'm going to be singing a song that I wrote myself." Our own students are full of talent and are even making their own songs for the show! While some of the underclassmen were disappointed originally, others are starting to become more excited upon hearing that they get to sing a song for the seniors. Pulsipher said, “I’m going to be teaching the underclassmen a song, that way you still get to participate and show your love for the seniors.” The seniors, upon hearing that, also decided to sing a song all together. The showcase is really bringing people together, and that is why the Senior Showcase is such a brilliant idea.
The auditions for the Senior Showcase are on the first and second of May, and the performance itself will be on the seventeenth of May. It is completely free for you and your friends. Stop on by to the Senior Showcase, listen to our talented peers, be a respectful audience member, and enjoy the show!
