Athletic director Clay Rounsaville at GPHS has made the hard decision of hiring new head coaches for the softball and baseball programs. One of them is a returning coach and the other is brand new to the stage.
The softball program is lucky enough to have Donnie Bellum back as the head coach. After a rough COVID year and personal matters, Bellum did not return after the 2020-21 season. Bellum’s career as head coach has been nothing but successful. As a head coach, he has made the quarter-finals of playoffs almost every year. Bellum is the most successful coach the softball program has ever seen. Some girls returning have never played for Bellum, but sophomore Mady Montejano says, “I’m nervous but excited, I've heard nothing but great things about him.” It’s nerve-wracking getting a new coach but Rounsaville wouldn’t hire someone unworthy of the job.
The returning players of the baseball team are excited to welcome back assistant coach Kyle Garrison as the new head coach. Since the group of boys already have so much love for this coach, this could be a great start to something new. Kyle Garrison was a very successful basketball and baseball player who attended Hidden Valley High School. Senior catcher Troy Osborne said, “He was a great assistant coach meaning he will only be an even better head coach.” Hopefully, Kyle can turn things around for the baseball program.
GPHS is very grateful to have these coaches representing our Cavemen and Lady Cavers. These two sports draw a lot of attention in the community of Grants Pass. Loads of young kids in the community play travel baseball or softball cause these sports are starting to get more popular over time.
Tryouts for both sports will be coming sooner than you know. They will be happening sometime in February. Coaches may be having workouts, so keep a lookout on Student Square for updates.
