In 2016, Kid Cudi released the album Passion, Pain, & Demon Slayin’. In that album, there are 18 songs, one of which is "Baptized in Fire". It was released on Dec. 1, 2016, as a promotional single from the former's sixth studio album. The song, which contains a sample of "Deja Vu" by Mort Garson, was produced by Mike Dean, Plain Pat and Kid Cudi. On the music website Old Time Music, it is stated that “ 'Baptized in Fire' is a song about overcoming hardships and emerging stronger on the other side.” Kid Cudi explains that he has been through tough times but has learned to use those experiences to his advantage. The fire in the title refers to the struggle, pain, and challenges that people encounter in life. Being baptized in fire means facing these challenges head-on and emerging as a stronger, more resilient person.

"Baptized in Fire" is a collaboration with Travis Scott. Song Facts states that “Kid Cudi has been a major influence on the Texan rapper, and the pair previously linked up on 'Through The Late Night', from Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight.” The song “Baptized In Fire” marked the third collaboration between Cudi and Scott, following the track "Way Back". Scott's musical style has been described as a "blend between traditional hip-hop and lo-fi", with a heavily appraised influence from rappers Kanye West and Kid Cudi. Travis Scott's name was inspired by his favorite uncle (named Travis), and the first name of one of his biggest inspirations, Kid Cudi (whose given name is Scott Mescudi).

“Baptized In Fire” was rated a 3.39/5.00 on Rate Your Music. Some of the users stated, “WT* this is garbage”, “uhhhhhh”, and “Mid”. While others said, “VERY GOOD WELL DONE”, “on repeat”, and “banger slaps”. This single seems to have very mixed reviews. The song talks about Kid Cudi’s experiences of being a well-known artist and the challenges that come with it. He mentions the attention from women. However, he acknowledges that they don't love him for who he is but for his fame. He also discusses his fear of failure and losing his loved ones, but ultimately decides that being a hero requires sacrifice.
