Riley searches for truths from the all-knowing Chair of Doom.
Located in Ms. Tyrrell’s classroom is a chair. It is a bit taller than average and has a fancy burgundy cushion. This chair has a dark past, and an even darker future. This chair is the infamous Chair of Doom. Its life is a story of sabotage, betrayal and annihilation.
The Chair of Doom has stood in the classroom for around five years. Tyrrell had wanted a shiny new part of her classroom. The chair fit that role perfectly. Unfortunately, the days of sunshine and tulips were quickly rained down upon. A classroom aid was tasked to assemble the chair. Whether it was vendetta or sabotage is unknown to this day, but the chair was doomed as soon as it was built. Tyrrell tearfully told The Scroll, “This was supposed to be my chair of safety, but it is my Chair of Doom.” This was not the only time students plagued the chair’s reputation.
The school year 2022-23 was an eventful one. Some might say too eventful. Two juniors took the chair from Tyrrell’s classroom with promises of a Chair of Hope. After two weeks of tireless building, the chair was returned. Tyrrell gleefully sat upon the chair, only to realize it had gotten worse. What had the two juniors done? Why had they committed this betrayal? Maybe the students are not to blame, but the chair itself is. Maybe the chair cannot be fixed. The chair might hold more power than any of us realize.
The Chair of Doom stands as a symbol for the journalism students of Tyrrell. Many of the students hold admiration for the chair. Lillie Olson, editor of The Scroll, says, “[Chair of Doom] gives me the thrill that I need, knowing that death could be so close.” Journalism students all over have flocked to the chair for a sense of control. The chair offers momentary relief from the storms of fate. Other journalism students, such as Joshua Miranda, admire the chair for its aesthetic abilities. The Scroll Vice President, Nathaniel Lee, stated, “[The Chair of Doom] makes a very nice noise when you wiggle on it. Like you’re dancing with death.” However, not all Scrollians feel the same toward the chair. Some dislike it for its instability, others have more aggressive feelings towards the Chair of Doom. Peter Easterwood, an author for The Scroll, described his feelings for the chair as “Overrated, I would throw it out a window at a child walking by.” Journalism students all react differently to the chair. Perhaps it is because of the chair's nature, or maybe it is the odd personalities in the journalism classroom.
With so many turning to the chair for guidance, speculations of its divine purpose have been made. Tyrrell predicts that “The end of the world will come when the Chair of Doom crashes.” However, the only way to know the chair’s true purpose here is by asking it. In an interview with the Chair of Doom, it says, “....” The same silence felt when a car slides on ice. It's like all of the deep, philosophical questions have been answered at once. What happens after death? Why are we here? Why is the world like this? The chair knows. The chair knows all.
The Chair of Doom stands still in Tyrrell’s classroom. It lurks and darkens the atmosphere. The chair is malevolent and holds the end in its plush seat. The Chair of Doom will never fall.
