Taeya is writing about the Peaky Blinders TV show and how the different characters adapt throughout the show.
In the show Peaky Blinders, which can be seen on Netflix, there is a wide array of interesting characters, all of which are struggling with the aftershocks of World War I. They must find a way to survive after this harrowing event. Through a series of events, it becomes clear that the only chance of survival is through a gang.
The main character is Thomas/Tommy Shelby, who is portrayed by Cillian Murphy, an Irish actor. Thomas has become a leader of the gang Peaky Blinders and, though Tommy shows a strong respectful attitude, he does happen to suffer from excess PTSD due to the aftershock of the war. Tommy struggles with his emotions, like anger and cheerfulness, which are rarely shown in his character's responses to situations. He also has trouble sleeping, since his mind always takes him back to the trenches that he was attacked in during the war.
The second character is Polly Gray/Aunt Polly. She is portrayed by actress Helen McCrory, who passed away on Apr.16, 2021 due to breast cancer. She did not serve in the war, but she did take care of the Shelby children when their parents died. Polly is a very important character because she helps Tommy with running the gang and keeping his siblings in line and safe. Although Gray was a big help, she sadly died in the show. It was said on Distractify that “Gray died from the IRA (Irish Republican Army) in the attempted assassination of Oswald Moseley, a side character in this British crime series”.
Third of the many important characters of Peaky Blinders is John/John Boy/Johnny Shelby, portrayed by Joe Cole. John is Tommy and Arthur's second younger brother. John is a part of the Peaky Blinders gang and is a part of their illegal horse race betting, also known as The Shelby Company Limited, which had become legal in Season 3, Episode 1. John Shelby is married to Esme Shelby, formerly Esme Lee. John does not suffer from any aftershocks of war like Tommy and Arthur, but he does have a tendency to be protective of his family, which is a character trait both he and Tommy share.
This show is a work of historical art. As stated by the Peaky Blinders home website, the hit television program may be a fictional story, but it is based on a very real gang that existed in the early 1900s. For those who enjoy shows about gangs, crime, drama and much more, Peaky Blinders is an enjoyable show that includes all of these elements and thrilling events as the show spirals into six seasons.
