All high schools put on dances, but there is no event in the history of media representation and true fact that can properly portray the most important night of the high school year: the prom. This year, Apr. 29, 2023. In the commons. Here at GPHS. 7-11 pm. Be there.
Every year, the National Honor Society puts on prom. Months of preparation, hours of decorating, and a whole team of support is needed to put on one special night. It costs $30 to attend the dance, but that is nothing compared to the money some people spend on preparations for the night. Plus, inside the dance, there will be free refreshments, photo opportunities, and party favors.
Historically, this is the most formal dance of the year. Long dresses and full suits are worn, rather than short body-con dresses and slacks with a button-down. Prom girl, an online dress shop that has been in business for over 20 years, says that “customers spend anywhere from $175 to $2,100 on prom.” Because of the prestige around this dance, it is only for upperclassmen– juniors, and seniors– but underclassmen can attend with a guest pass.
This year, the theme is Masquerade. Many believe this prom will be the best year yet because of the outstanding theme. The commons will be decorated with medieval drapes, candle-lit tables, and free Masquerade masks littered around for everyone to wear. The Scroll asked next year’s NHS PR officer Aylah Graves what she thought of the themes and the upcoming dance. She said, “I'm really looking forward to prom. It's going to be LIT. NHS has done a lot of work to make it special this year. And I think the theme is really cool and unique. Anyone who is anyone is gonna be there, so pull up and get hyped.”
April is the month of prom. It’s almost here and it is time to get excited. As seen in all coming-of-age movies, prom is important for many reasons. However, the preparation, theme, hype, tradition, and people, are what make the night truly one of a kind. Schoolwide, students are already buying their outfits, scheduling pamper appointments, and campaigning for votes for king and queen, how ready are you?
