Spring is the Best

In this opinion article, Tessa makes an argument as to why spring is the superior season.

WHy spring is the best season

Written By Tessa Hager

Spring is finally here! It is time to break out the long-forgotten t-shirts and shake off the old cobwebs from the shorts we have not worn in many months. When thinking of spring, we often think of warmer weather, flowers, and birds chirping. However, there is much more to spring than sun, tulips, and cardinals. While some may think of spring as a time of waiting for summer, spring is actually the best season of the year, for so many reasons.

More SUn, More Happiness

Firstly, I will state the obvious: warmer weather. While some animals go into hibernation during the winter, humans tend to have their own version in the colder months. We stay inside all the time, and although the blankets and sweaters are cozy, being indoors too much can lead to depression. According to Tri-City Med, “Getting some sun increases your serotonin and helps you stave off Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and sun exposure can also help people with anxiety and depression.” Once spring comes, we are able to spend more time outdoors in the sun, a natural source of vitamin D. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to an increase in depressive symptoms. Spending just 5-15 minutes in the sun can help give you vitamin D, which can make you happier. The sun also signals your body to produce serotonin, which is like a natural antidepressant.

Even animals come out of their seasonal depression (hibernation) once spring begins. Birds fly back home after flying south for warmer weather, birds start chirping in the mornings again, and butterflies begin to flutter around the flowers. Hearing the happy chirps of birds in the morning can give you a great start to your day. There are also more baby animals during spring, so you may get to see a cute baby deer as it bounds across a field.

Spring CLeaning

Spring is a time for growth and new beginnings. What better way to start than by cleaning or organizing? Being organized allows you to focus on priorities. It also lets you be less stressed. According to Beaumont, a health and wellness organization, “An endless list of things to do constantly looming over you is often the source of stress in your life. Getting organized will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.” Being clean and organized can also lead to better sleep, since you will not keep yourself awake from thinking about all the clutter. Disorganization can make you distracted at work, as well as at school. If you are able to organize your assignments in your Google Drive, or clean out your backpack and sort it, you will be able to find things easier and not lose any completed assignments.

Flowers, flowers and More Flowers

When thinking of spring, flowers may “spring” to mind. Flowers come in all different shapes, sizes, and even scents. Walking outside and seeing flowers blooming everywhere can brighten your day, both literally and metaphorically. As reported by the Society of American Florists, who wrote about a study on how flowers are linked to happiness, “Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.” Whether you take a walk and see flowers blooming everywhere, or you buy from your local florist, you are sure to find fresh flowers during spring. Placing even just one bouquet in your house can brighten it up and make your house feel more like a home.

Trees

During the autumn and winter months, trees go dormant and appear dead. We wait for months for trees to gain life once again and, finally, in spring, they grow leaves. From taking a hike in a forest or just driving around town, you can see all the trees coming back to life. Now you can take a break in the shade when you are walking in the park, have a picnic, or simply enjoy them around your house and outside your windows.

Mild Temperatures

Although summer might have a two-month break from school, spring is still the best season. Spring has the perfect warm weather, without being overwhelming. You can go outside and enjoy life without being hit in the face by 100-degree weather. There is no need to blast the air conditioner all day and stick your face in the freezer because spring has just the right amount of sun. Winter and summer are both extreme in their weather, but spring has the perfect mildness to it-- similar to autumn, but without the trees going dormant.

Spring has sun, flowers, and baby animals. The combination of trees giving us shade once again and the sun peeking through the couple of clouds on a blue sky day proves that spring has what every other season tries to give us, but cannot quite accomplish what spring can bring... pure happiness.
