On Apr. 9, 2023, Easter will finally be here. It is time for chocolate bunnies, egg coloring, and enjoying sunny weather – but what exactly are you supposed to do on Easter? Sure, you can color and hide eggs, throw around fake Easter grass, and eat chocolate all day, but what happens when you run out of chocolate and the Easter grass gets everywhere? When put into perspective, Easter can sound like a boring holiday, especially since we do not get any time off of school for it at Grants Pass High School. While it is true that Easter is not as big of a holiday as Christmas, it can still be fun when celebrated the right way. Here are some different activities you can do to celebrate Easter.
Coloring eggs sounds like the most usual activity to do on Easter, but you can spice it up a bit and make it different. There are all kinds of different ways to decorate eggs, but the easiest way to shake the day up is by buying different egg coloring kits. At nearly any grocery store, you can find a variety of kits for different designs. While most of them include a white crayon to draw on eggs, some come with different stickers, glitter, or even displays. Last year, I had a marbling kit and some of my eggs came out looking somewhat like what I would imagine a dragon egg to look like.
Easter is the holiday of life, so what better way to celebrate than by gardening? Planting spring flowers such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, or lilacs (which do not bloom until the end of spring/beginning of summer) can be a great way to keep the Easter spirit alive for weeks or even months to come. Marigolds are an excellent flower to plant on Easter because they are easy to grow and they grow quickly. They do well in virtually any type of soil and they attract bees if you are wanting to expand your garden.
Baking can be a good way to not only have delicious treats in an hour or two but also a way to spend time with your family. Easter is a holiday that is best spent with family and friends, and baking forces you to get in the kitchen with your family and work as a team. From something like chocolate chip cookies to more advanced Easter treats, baking will fill the house with Easter spirit and, at the end of the day, you and your family will have a delicious reward for all your hard work and teamwork.
Expanding on the baking idea, you can bake Easter bread. What is Easter bread? According to Delish, “Easter bread is an Italian and Greek tradition. It's a sweetened, yeasted dough, similar to brioche, with colored eggs baked right into the dough (that you don't eat).” You can add chocolate to it or even shape it like a rabbit to celebrate Easter. Additionally, adding sprinkles or pastel icing can add to the Easter aesthetic.
Time capsules are a fun way to remind yourself of the past in years to come. Buy some plastic Easter eggs and cut out slips of paper. You can write about one activity you did this Easter on each slip and hide them around the house to find during the next few months. Another option is to write which activities you want to do next Easter that you did not do this Easter and open them next year.
While Easter can be a holiday that some people look over and forget about (besides the seasonal Cadbury Eggs), incorporating new and old traditions in your celebrations can make it more fun. If you are feeling a bit like an Easter Grinch, create new traditions that make you look forward to it. After all, the pastel Easter colors could get anyone in a good mood.
