ENGLISH 7 CORE (566000)

Length: Year Available for: 7th Grade

Students will develop and strengthen skills and strategies necessary for effective communication at a grade appropriate level. Refining and magnifying the skills described in the Utah State Core Standards, they improve their expertise in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage.

HONORS ENGLISH 7 (566100)

Length: Year Available for: 7th Grade

Students gain advanced skills and strategies necessary for proficient communication in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage. Magnifying the skills described in the Utah State Core Standards, they pursue individual literacy interests and projects using creative and critical thinking at a more in-depth level than in a core class. Rigorous class work will prepare students for high school honors classes.

ENGLISH 8 CORE (566400)

Length: Year Available for: 8th Grade

Students will develop and strengthen skills and strategies necessary for effective communication at a grade appropriate level of expectation. Refining and magnifying the skills described in the State Core, they will improve their expertise in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage.

HONORS ENGLISH 8 (566500)

Length: Year Available for: 8th Grade

Students will enhance skills and strategies necessary for proficient communication in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language usage. Magnifying the skills described in the Utah Core State Standards, they will pursue individual literacy interests and projects using creative and critical thinking at a more in-depth level than in a core class. Rigorous class work will prepare students for high school honors classes.

CREATIVE WRITING 1 (569361)

Length: Semester Available for: 7th and 8th Grade

This course is an introduction to the art of creative writing and publishing. Class participants will write and revise work in several genres including personal essays, short stories, poetry, and others. The central focus of the class will be on the writing process, using mentor texts as inspiration and models, and learning from providing and listening to feedback. Most important, however, will be learning to engage in a supportive creative community that empowers individual curiosity, and artistic risk taking.

JOURNALISM (569550)

Length: Year Available for: 7th and 8th Grade

This class is an introduction to newspaper writing. Students will stud the four types of journalistic writing: news features, sports, and editorials. Students will practice fundamental skills necessary to proofread and edit copy and will learn basic layout procedures using production software. Students will brainstorm ideas for news stories and features and the focus and goals associated with the newspaper. Students will learn about how a news agency is run and become familiar with some of the premier reporters and editors in the news world. Students will be expected to write for the school newspaper as well as accomplish other tasks as assigned.
