Granite Drug Use Policy
The Granite District / school policy is intended to provide a safe and productive educational and work environment for students and employees free from the effects of unlawful use of controlled substances, alcohol, and tobacco. To ensure compliance to this policy, Cyprus High School will NOT permit the following:
Possession or use of any vaping devices (tobacco or THC-based devices).
Possession of any drug paraphernalia.
refers to equipment, products, and materials of any kind, including the constituent parts thereof, that are designed or intended for use in packaging, repackaging, processing, storing, containing, concealing, injecting, ingesting, inhaling, or otherwise introducing into the human body alcohol, any controlled substance, or other intoxicants, and more thoroughly described in Utah Code § 58-37a-3 and 4.
Possession / use of / marijuana, alcohol, or any other controlled substances.
Students suspected to be under the influence of marijuana, alcohol, or any other controlled substances, will be subject to search and investigation.
Search & Seizure
Granite School District has the a responsibility to safeguard students. As such, school administration has a right to conduct searches for students suspected of having possession of, using, or to be under the influence of controlled substances. Parents will be notified when such searches take place.
School Drug Use Discipline Policy
Tobacco:
I. First Offense:
A. $25 Tobacco / Vaping Ticket
B. Parent contact
II. Second Offense
A. $50 Tobacco / Vaping Ticket
B. Parent Contact
Marijuana / Alcohol & Other Controlled substances:
Controlled substances refers to a drug or some other substance, or an analog of a controlled substance, that is capable of causing a condition of intoxication, inebriation, excitement, stupefaction, or the dulling of the brain or nervous system or that is identified in the Utah Controlled Substances Act, Utah Code § 58-37-4.
Consequences for violating district drug use policy:
I. First Offense:
A. Parent/guardian/student conference
B. Suspension up to three days
C. Completion of the Non-Use Contract with the building administrator
D. Attendance at Granite School District’s QUIT Program within two months of the documented offense I am aware that the following will take place if I further violate this policy:
II. Second Offense
A. Parent/guardian/student conference
B. Suspension to Prevention & Student Placement for placement in an alternate educational setting for up to 90 school days, or until the student shows written evidence that an appropriate substance use treatment program has been successfully completed
C. Encouragement for parent/guardian to seek outside help or treatment
III. Third Offense
A. Parent/guardian/student conference
B. Suspension to Prevention & Student Placement for placement in an alternate educational setting for up to 180 school days, or until the student shows written evidence that an appropriate substance use treatment program has been successfully completed
C. Encouragement for parent/guardian to seek outside help or treatment
IV. Consequence for selling or distributing
A. Parent/guardian/student conference
B. Suspension to Prevention & Student Placement for placement in an alternate educational setting for up to 180 school days
C. Encouragement for parent/guardian to seek outside help or treatment
Medicine Use Policy
Students may retain and self-administer medications subject to the following:
MAY NOT EXCEED ONE (1) DOSAGE FOR THE DAY.
Medication (prescription or non-prescriptions) must be taken by prescription or manufacturer’s directions
Medication (prescription or non-prescription) shall not be sold, shared, or otherwise given to others.
A responsible adult must transport syringes (insulin pens accepted) to and from school, and they must be kept in a locked cabinet or drawer in the office.
Parents may request for emergency medications (e.g. epi-pens, inhalers) be locked in the Counseling Center Office.
