History: The department of Physics is the oldest department of this college as its history dates back to 1967-68 when Prof. Syed Fazal Ali Shah (Acting Principal) purchased apparatus for Physics lab to start Graduate class in this department. The department started its M.Sc. class in October 1969 in the era of Principal, Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
In 1971, the first session of M.Sc. class passed out with 100% result from the University of Punjab due to collective efforts of founding Head of the Department, Prof. Mukhtar Muhammad and his colleagues, Prof. Hafeez-ud-Din, Prof. Rasheed Ahmad Wahla, Prof. Rao Tajamal Hussain and Prof. Rana Nisar Ahmad.
In 1973, Prof. Sheikh Aftab Ahmad became the head of the department. He got approval of the subject Special Electronics in M.Sc. class which was not taught in any college at that time. Later on, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zakriya, Prof. Dr. Shujat Mehmood, Prof. Dr. Badar Salman, Prof. Dr. Barkat Ali Fareedi, Prof. Rana Muhammad Arshad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Prof. Noor Ahmad, Prof. Zahoor Ahmad, Prof. Syed Naseem Hassan Shah, Prof. Malik Pervez, Prof Javid Rashid and Prof. Zakir Hussain Bhatti put their sincere efforts to accelerate the momentum of the department.
It would be injustice if we do not mention the name of internationally acclaimed and Nobel Prize winner Pakistani scientist, Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam here. In 1974, he provided complete apparatus for five experiments to the Physics-lab from England on the request of college administration as Physics-lab didn’t have adequate apparatus to meet the needs of M.Sc. classes.
Department of Physics has produced many distinguished personalities who are proving their worth on national and international level which includes Dr. Bilal Ahmad Sukhera (VC, Islamia University Bahawalpur), Dr. Muhammad Sabir (Atomic Energy Commission Pakistan), Dr. Javid Iqbal Akhtar (Atomic Energy Commission Pakistan), Dr. Muhammad Arshad Ch.
