Department of Botany & Biology

OVERVIEW: Botany Department is located in the Hafiz Kashif Safdar Block of the college. The program of study being offered is BS (4 year semester system). The department has the facilities of two green houses, and a botanical garden with experimental plots for practical purposes. A study of plant life in different areas of Pakistan is important part of study programs of this department. The graduates have the vast opportunity of working in Education, Agriculture, Forest Department and Research Organizations.

HISTORY: The Botany Department of this college was established on the day when first BSc class was started by Prof. Abdur Raheem Sheikh in the year 1964. He was the first Head of Botany Department and served the college for 20 years. Later on, he joined Govt. College, Lahore in 1984. During his service in GC, Lahore, he served in Civil Secretariat Lahore as an Additional Secretary Education Academics.

In the year 1998, MSc Botany was started under the headship of Prof. Rana Muhammad Faryad Khan. Later on, BS Botany classes were started in 2010. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yasin and Prof. Dr. Khalid Farooq Akbar took the brave initiative of starting research work in this college. First research project was assigned to second session (1999-2001) of MSc Botany. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yasin became Principal of the college in the year 2005 and served as Principal until his sad demise on 09/02/2010. As a Principal, he did a lot for the development of college including establishment of Computer lab, provision of Sui gas, establishment of Botanical Garden and construction of Hafiz Kashif Safdar block for Botany Department.

Prof. Dr. Khalid Farooq Akbar also served as Principal of the college from 03/03/2014 to 08/01/2015. After his retirement from this college, he served as Pro-Rector, The University of Lahore, Sargodha campus, as well as in different international organizations as environmental consultant such as World Bank, Asian Development Bank, WWF-Pak, LEAD International and Infra Eco Network of Europe. Prof. Rana Muhammad Faryad Khan served as in-charge of Masjid Affairs in this college and was nominated as khateeb and served for 40 years (1979-2019).

The students of the department achieved a number of distinctions in the university in different years. The Alumnae of the department are serving the nation in different fields. Many of them are working in Education department, Government of Punjab as lecturers and assistant professors. Dr. Fatima Batool of this department is working as Assistant Professor at University of Lahore. Many of our former students are doing their Ph.D. abroad like Miss Ayesha Rukhsar, Samira Akram etc. Dr. Nudrat Aysha Akram a former student of MSc Botany of this college is currently serving as a member of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Headquarters in Italy.
