History of Govt. Graduate College Sahiwal
The history of this prestigious institution dates back to the humble beginnings of 1942 when Govt. College Montgomery was established in a rented building on the Circular Road of the City. This building lacked the facilities like proper laboratories, enough classrooms, and sufficient playgrounds. In these circumstances, initially Arts subjects were introduced at Inter and Degree levels which were added on with Science classes at B.Sc. level in 1950. With the change of city name from Montgomery to Sahiwal, the college was accordingly renamed as Govt. College Sahiwal in November 1966. The College previously affiliated with the University of the Punjab, Lahore came under the jurisdiction of Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan in 1975. Govt. College Sahiwal became a Graduate centre in 1969 when the classes of M.Sc. Physics were started. Later on, Graduate classes in the subjects of English, Economics in 1993 and Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Political Science & Statistics in 1999 and Urdu in 2002 were also started. The name of the College was changed to Govt. Postgraduate College, Sahiwal in 2009 by the Higher Education Department, Punjab, Lahore. However, the greatest milestone was achieved in 2010 when BS- Year Program in Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science and Statistics was started. Moreover, BS-4 Year Program in Education, Urdu and Zoology was also started in Academic Session 2020. In February 2021, College is again renamed as Govt. Graduate College Sahiwal by the Higher Education Department, Punjab, Lahore
Architectural plan of the present campus was approved before the emergence of Pakistan, but its construction was materialized with the enormous efforts of Professor Dr. Muhammad Jahangir Khan and Professor Abdul Aleem Farooqi in 1951. Professor F.M. Khan transformed the 82 Acres of barren land into enchanting lawns, colourful gardens and lush green belts. Excellence in beauty and sophistication was enhanced on all levels by the vision of Professor Mian Asghar Ali. A magnificent masjid and grand library were the most precious gifts from Professor Muhammad Anwar Malik to the college campus. The Center of Excellence and masjid adjacent to the administrative block were the memorable addition.
Regarding Sports and other facilities, Government Graduate College Sahiwal has become a recognition tag of Sahiwal city and a well-known institution at national level because of its splendid building, capacious hostels, unique swimming pool and a rich library. The college provides sports facilities in all the games. With the presence of a proper canteen, colourful Rose Garden, Sunken Garden, Palm Garden, Terrace Garden and a vast Oval Ground for multiple sports purposes, college gives every possible opportunity to the students to prosper and flourish.
