Overview: The Department of Chemistry of Government Graduate College, Sahiwal is offering Chemistry related degree programmes at BS and Master’s levels.
Chemistry is the science of change. By studying the basic properties of substances and the many transformations they undergo, the chemist finds solutions to scientific challenges and contributes to the development of new technologies. Discoveries in new life saving drugs, solutions to environmental problems, new products to benefit consumers--all result from the work of chemists.
Chemistry is an important discipline as it deals with nature of matter, its measurement and modeling. In that sense chemistry really matters as it is essential to explain the entire real world. Traditionally, it is divided into sub-disciplines, such as organic, inorganic, physical, biological, theoretical, and analytical, but these distinctions blur as it is increasingly appreciated how all of science, let alone chemistry, is interconnected. Modern interdisciplinary chemistry research resulted in synthesis of novel drugs, creation of new materials, and tailoring of material properties of all sorts. It is no wonder then that chemistry is called the "Central Science".
History: Chemistry Department is one of the oldest departments of this college. It was established by the founding head of the department, Dr. Inayat Ali Bhatti. Later on, Prof. Ch. Muhmmad Sarwar, Prof. Ch. Abdul Aziz, Prof. Ch. Muhammad Ashraf, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Mughal, Prof. Muhammad Shoaib Sipra, Prof. Ch. Maqsood Ahmad, Prof. Ch. Asif Tanveer, Prof. Ch. Noor-ul-Haq and Prof. Abdul Razzaq remained heads of the department respectively. Masters classes in the subject of chemistry started in 1998 and BS programme started in 2010. Currently the department is serving the college under the visionary headship of Dr. Muhammad Jamil. The students of this department achieved distinctions in the university in different years.
