Tactile Landscapes-Challenge

Objectives

  • explore how using different thickness of collage supplies create different types of texture and depth to a project.
  • deepen their understanding of how artists use mixed media to create a desired effect in collage.
  • use a combination of different types of paper products to create a landscape that has texture and depth.

Tactile Landscapes

This sculpture skill, where the form stands out slightly from the background, is based on a method called "bas relief" which is French for "low relief."

A. Gather supplies. Foam core and corrugated cardboard can both be used to create this project. We have very limited supplies of foam core so make sure to cut all shapes right on the edge so none is wasted.

B. Try it out.

Using the foam core,

  1. Glue a series of cut foam tiles in a row. Draw simple landscape design on them with a marker.
  2. Using an x-acto knife, cut out the individual hill shapes. Start with the smallest slopes(those farthest away from the viewer), then turn to the larger and nearer mounds.
  3. Fix the first layer of shapes to a matte board using elmer's glue. Glue the remaining shapes on top, layer by layer.
  4. Once you have stuck on the final layer, use a wire brush to shape and smooth the relief so that the finished landscape has a sense of perspective. Final layer of thin plaster helps to create the added texture to finish off this landscape. Paint is optional (discuss your plan with me)
