Objectives

  • explore how using different thickness of collage supplies create different types of texture and depth to a project.
  • deepen their understanding of how artists use mixed media to create a desired effect in collage.
  • use a combination of different types of paper products to create a landscape that has texture and depth.

Multimedia Layered Landscapes

This collage skill, where the form stands out slightly from the background, is based on a method called "bas relief" which is French for "low relief."

A. Gather supplies. Magazines and corrugated cardboard can both be used to create this project. We have plenty of magazines and I will hand some out to each student.

B. Try it out.

  1. Plan out your landscaped. We are not limited to landscapes here on earth. Get creative! Must include foreground, middle ground and background.
  2. Use paper from magazines and recycled thin boxes(cereal boxes) to choose your colors needed to create your planned landscape. Cardboard may be colored using any medium.
  3. Layout your pieces before you glue! Start with your background first then layer it on top.
  4. Fix the first layer of shapes to a matte board using elmer's glue. Glue the remaining shapes on top, layer by layer. Glue as you go but remember to follow what you laid out.
  5. Once you have stuck on the final layer, use mod podge to seal your entire project.

Upload progress photos and final photo to your digital portfolio on Friday.
