Objectives
- explore how portraiture can be an avenue that they can use to represent their own identities and make meaning of what is important to them
- deepen their understanding of how artists and sitters use portraiture as a means to convey individual, community/cultural, and national identity
- use a combination of visual arts and language arts to create self-portraits
- contemplate how artists’ choices reveal some—but perhaps not all—aspects of the sitters’ identities

1. Work through the process outlined in the handout to come up with 3-5 words per row describing your identity.
