In our first meeting, we decided to focus on food as our first project. Therefore this page is a tool to help guide us in furthering our understanding of food and creating the change you all wish to see at within our community.

The following "Categories" should act more as guided questions to help you all begin to think of the kinds of projects and goals you all would like to accomplish throught the year and the years to come.

Food Desert Communities

  2. What is your schools, district, and cities history as a Food Desert Community?

  3. What historical policies such as Redlining and Blockbusting or other local policies have played a role in creating the food insecurity we see today?

Where Does Our Food Come From?

  1. Where does our school get our food for school meals?

  2. How does the food get to our school?

  3. What are the main food stores in our community?

  4. Why is there a lack of healthy foods in our community?

Healthy Food

  1. What are healthy food choices?

  2. What do nutritionists do and how can they help us make healthy food choices?

  3. What are the types of healthy foods we need the most in our community?

  4. Where can we get healthy food and how do we integrate healthy food on a school, district, local, and city level?

Food Waste

  1. What is Food Waste?

  2. How do we dispose of food waste?

  3. Where does our food waste go?

  4. How do we dispose of food waste at our school, in our community, in our city?

  5. Why do we need to dispose of food waste properly?

Local Initiatives

  1. Are there any organizations that are currently working on food insecurity within our community - school, district, city, state levels?

  2. How is our school and our school district working to address food insecurity?

  3. Are there any gaps in these initiatives - meaning do these initiatives address all of the issues surrounding food insecurity in our community or is there room for improvement?

Officials

  1. Who are the people that handle food and food waste in our community?

  2. Who are the local community members, district and city officials, and organizations that handle our food and food insecurity within our community?

  3. Who would we like to get in contact with to speak about where our food comes from, what happens to our food waste, and how we can gain better access to healthy foods?

Field Trips

  1. Where would we like to go or see to get a better understanding of food, food waste and food insecurity within our community?
