Our Primary School Reading Competition has proven to be a fantastic event, celebrating our young students' love of reading. The competition was held in three exciting rounds, and students from various year levels showcased their reading skills, comprehension, and passion for books. Here’s a look back at this beautiful journey.
First Round: March 25-28
The first round kicked off on March 25 with great enthusiasm. Students gathered in their classrooms, ready to dive into their favorite stories. Each participant was required to read from a range of 30 titles of fiction and non-fiction books in order to demonstrate their reading fluency and expression. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and a hint of nervousness as the young readers answered the first round of quiz questions on Kahoot! By the end of the quiz, a group of five talented readers were selected to advance to the second round.
Second Round: April 25
The competition heated up in the second round, held on April 30. This time, the challenges were more formidable. Participants had to compete with other students from the same year level. After diving into their favorite books and sharing their insights enthusiastically, our participants made this round successful. In this round, participants were given quizzes comprising multiple-choice questions and a short-answer quiz.
Final Round: May 17 and 20
The grand finale on May 17 and 20 were the highlight of the competition. This round coincided with National Book Day activities; the Year 2 to Year 3 divisions were held on Friday, May 17th, 2024, in the MPR. However, due to the Year 5 Camp, the Year 4 to Year 6 divisions had their final round on Monday, May 20th.
The finalists, having proven their mettle in the previous rounds, were ready to give it their all. In this round, participants were given quizzes comprising multiple-choice questions and a short-answer quiz and had to compete with other participants from different year levels. They were divided into Year 2 and 3 divisions and Year 3 to 6 divisions. This format allowed them to express their ability to be brave in the competition. In the end, a winner from each year level and three winners from each division were chosen, each receiving a medal.
Conclusion
The Primary School Reading Competition was more than just a contest; it was an inspiring journey through the world of literature. It highlighted the importance of reading in developing critical thinking, empathy, and creativity in young minds. We congratulate all the participants for their hard work and dedication and extend our heartfelt thanks to the teachers and parents who supported this event. We look forward to next year's competition and another opportunity to celebrate the power of reading.
