On Tuesday, 7 April, the Grade 4 students participated in an educational visit to the National Monument. This learning experience was designed to provide students with first-hand knowledge of the historical journey of the Indonesian nation, beginning from the era of the Sriwijaya Kingdom and continuing through to Indonesia’s Independence.
During the visit, the students listened carefully to explanations from the tour guide, read the written historical information, and observed a series of dioramas illustrating significant events in Indonesia’s struggle during the periods of colonization and warfare. They also learned about the important roles of national heroes who contributed courageously to these historic events and the nation’s freedom.
Through this activity, the students explored Indonesia’s historical experiences and social development, gaining a deeper understanding of the continuity and changes that have shaped the country over time. The visit also helped them recognize individuals who inspired transformation, the factors that influenced the course of national history, and the lasting impact of historical events on society today.
Overall, the educational visit enriched the students’ appreciation of Indonesia’s heritage and strengthened their awareness of how the past continues to influence the present and future.
As the culmination of their learning journey and final project for the Unit of Inquiry titled Where We Are in Place and Time, Grade 4 students held a Living Museum event on Friday, April 24. This special occasion impressed the entire school community through creative, informative, and meaningful performances.
During the Living Museum, students wore costumes representing the historical figures they had chosen to study. These figures were influential individuals whose ideas, struggles, and contributions created significant changes in society and continue to have an impact today. Through this presentation, students not only learned about history but also brought it to life for their audience.
During their presentations, students shared the results of their research in both English and Bahasa Indonesia. Using the first-person point of view, they told the life stories of the figures they portrayed as if they were truly those individuals. This approach created a deeper learning experience while making history come alive in an engaging, interesting, and easy-to-understand way.
Throughout the unit, students also explored how the ideas and actions of these historical figures brought change to society over time. Based on their understanding, students wrote historical fiction pieces from the perspective of their chosen characters. This activity helped develop their critical thinking, research, creative writing, and communication skills.
The Living Museum was presented to an audience consisting of students from Grade 3 to Grade 6, teachers, and parents. On this occasion, Grade 4 students demonstrated confidence, creativity, and pride in the learning process they had completed. They also showed a deep understanding of the historical figures they represented.
The Living Museum became a meaningful celebration of learning, combining history, storytelling, research, and student voice into one inspiring experience. Through this activity, students not only learned about the past, but also understood how one individual can create a significant impact on the world.
