Mindfulness

Meet Eabhan Ni Shuileabhain

Eabhan teaches essential skills and creative writing in Lifelong Learning at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai across three sites: Caernarfon, Bangor and Llangefni. Eabhan has studied Level Three Reiki and has a diploma in Mindfulness.

Below are a number of Eabhan's meditations and visualizations where she draws heavily on the shamanic tradition, so many of them use nature and the natural world as a way for you to access your own inner wisdom and intuition.

"I also have trained as a shamanic practitioner, one of the oldest spiritual practices we have. A shaman was the medicine man/woman of the tribe who journeyed in the spirit world through waking dreams to find answers to the problems—medical and spiritual—of the tribe."

Mindfulness is about paying more attention to the present moment, to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you.

The theory behind mindfulness is that by using various techniques to bring your attention to the present (usually focusing on your body and your breathing), you can:

  • Notice how thoughts come and go in your mind. You may learn that they don't have to define who you are, or your experience of the world, and you can let go of them.

  • Notice what your body is telling you. For example, tension or anxiety can often be felt in your body (such as in a fast heartbeat, tense muscles or shallow breathing).

  • Create space between you and your thoughts, so you can react more calmly.
