Students learn what goes into an effective design and use it to create their own design for a truss style bridge. Then they construct a model of their bridge and compete to see who can support the most weight.
Students start with a project that emphasizes the top 2 traits that employers look for in new employees… the ability to cooperatively work with others, and to creatively solve problems. This is accomplished by having students work in groups to create a marble maze using limited materials. Students collect data on the results of their work, then participate in a trial to decide the outcome of the Marble maze. Other projects completed in 8th grade may include a Mouse trap powered car. They use a mouse trap to power a vehicle they design, and compete to travel the furthest distance.
