5th grade social studies explores the history of North America. Through inquiry based lessons students dive into units such as the Maya, Inca, and Aztec as well as New France, Puerto Rican Statehood, the Declaration of Independence and the effects of slavery in North and South America. Units are based around a central inquiry based question that students seek to answer.
6 SOCIAL STUDIES
6th grade social studies students investigate early humans and the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece and Rome. Emphasis is on gaining knowledge and understanding of geography, early settlements’ cultures, and achievements. Students examine critical issues, pivotal events, and important people using a combination of textbooks, informational books and online resources. They demonstrate their knowledge via classwork, quizzes, tests, and projects.
7 SOCIAL STUDIES
In Grades 7 and 8, students will examine the United States and New York State through a historical lens. The two-year sequence is arranged chronologically beginning with the settlement of North and South America by Native Americans and ending with an examination of the U.S. in the 21st century. Although the courses emphasize the skill of chronological reasoning and causation, the courses also integrate the skills and content from geography, politics, economy, and culture into the study of history.
7th grade Social Studies examines and evaluates early American and New York State history from exploration of the New World through the early part of the 19th century. It is a chronological journey exploring how the United States came to be born up to the causes of the Civil War. This course will integrate skills and content from geography, politics, economy, and culture. In Social Studies 7 we will develop reading, writing, and analysis skills using 21st century educational methods such as technology integration and examining both primary and secondary sources to get a deeper understanding of how the United States developed in its earliest years.
8 SOCIAL STUDIES

8th grade Social Studies focuses on a primarily chronological study of history and geography in the United States and New York as well as economic, social, and political trends. The course content is divided into key ideas which trace the human experience in the United States from just prior to the beginning of the US Civil War up to the end of Post World War II.
