Join us for the Hour of Code 2017 as we celebrate National Computer Science Ed Week from December 4 - 10. A little history, this week was chosen in honor of Grace Hopper who was born on December 9. Not only was she the first female individual recipient of the National Medal of Technology in 1991 but also a pioneer in the field of computer science. Click here to read more about Ms. Hopper.
This will be the fifth year that our district will participate in the Hour of Code. In past years, many of you have participated in activities and some have stepped up to help run events here at the high school as well as other schools in the district.
I'm more excited than ever to help organize Hour of Code events at the high school, Florence Roche and across the district. Similar to past years, I'm looking for a group of high school student ambassadors to travel with me to one of the elementary schools in our district to share some coding love on Monday, December 4th.
Why would anyone want to do this? Not only will you gain awesome presentation skills and hone some basic programming skills, but there is nothing that compares to the smile from a kid that you helped to get it! Previous ambassadors always came back to the high school inspired from the day and eager to do it again. This isn't a one way street. Like I said, the younger students benefit greatly from the day as well. They think the world of you and LOOOOOOOVE it when the "Big Kids" visit! Past ambassadors know how awesome this is! I can't stress enough that NO EXPERIENCE is required. We will work together to make sure you are comfortable with the activities but you might need to practice a bit on your own too. See the "How To" video below for running an event. It provides a nice overview of what you can expect and additional resources. We will take care of the logistics, you only need to get comfortable with a tool if you want to help, or sit back, relax and wait to participate in an event here at the high school. If you would rather just participate in an event details will follow as we get closer to National Computer Science Education Week.
So, if you are interested in becoming a student ambassador and traveling to one of our elementary schools, working helping here at the high school, or both, look no further, simply complete the form included in this email. Still on the fence.... Would you like to teach younger students or peers the basics of computer science? By basic, I mean basic ideas like logic, computational thinking, and problem solving to complete a task. It is not rocket science! NO EXPERIENCE is required, just a passion for helping others and a little time to help get yourself prepared.
