STUDENTS & STAFF OF THE MONTH

This school year we are celebrating our scholars and teachers through monthly Students and Staff of the Month. Scholars are nominated and voted on by their teachers. Educators are nominated and voted on by their students. At the end of each month votes are tabulated and at the beginning of the next month the winners are announced. For the month of September our first winners were: Toryon Gardner (4), Jowell Robles (5), Samuel Schroeder (6), Laila Reid (7), Molly Steiner (8), Londyn Humphrey (AA), Lily Duvall (PE), and Santana Hayden (Music & WL). Our first Educator of the Month was Mr. Glen Allen. Visitors can see them all celebrated in the front of the school as they walk in.

What's happening in S.T.E.A.M class in Grades 4-6?

Students in 6th grade are planning their trimester project; they are redesigning spaces in Glen Hills that are more welcoming, more sustainable, and that integrate art created by students. Other students in 4th & 5th Grade are learning about how things in our world have changed over time and will be taking classes at Glen Hills with the Parks Department and Reflo to conduct investigations. STEAM provides an opportunity for students to identify real world challenges/projects and work collaboratively to create solutions using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.

8th Grade

8th Grade Extracurricular Interests Written by: James H. 8th Grade Math Teacher

Sports are very important to the students of Glen Hills, whether they're on the court or sitting on the bleachers. But sometimes Athletic extracurriculars can outshine equally important clubs. I had the pleasure of interviewing members of the Dungeons and Dragons Club, the STEM Club, the Chess Club, and Rainbow Rights.

I interviewed Jamison D in the 8th grade for the Dungeons and Dragons Club. He has been playing D&D for a few years now and has been the dungeon master for multiple campaigns. He said that the educational value of the D&D Club is that, "It teaches children to be more creative and also builds teamwork. It also improves your ability to problem-solve." He went on to say that he enjoyed, "The role-playing elements. It's like acting where you get to be another person but without all the pressure. When I asked why you should join he stated that, "D&D is very fun and also very educational."

I also had the opportunity to speak with Owen R in the 8th grade about the STEAM club. In our conversation, Owen talked a lot about how the club encourages creativity through various media platforms. When asked why scholars should join his response was, “There is lots of fun stuff, you can build things, work in teams with your friends, and socialize in this club.”

Additionally, I met with Elena J of the 8th grade to learn more about making strategic moves in Chess Club. Elena opened my eyes to the value of chess as far as problem solving. Members of this club not only play an exciting and strategic game, but they reflect on their games and work to improve. When I asked Elena what her favorite things about the club was her response was, “My favorite thing is doing game reviews so we can look at our old tournament games and grow from them.” So, if you’re looking for a strategic, problem solving activity, chess may be right for you!

Finally, I had a moment to chat with a member of the Rainbow Rights Club. This club member shed light on how this club talks about the history of the LGBTQIA+ community along with creating a place for everyone and anyone. “I really enjoy the community of people because they are all really supportive of each other.”

There are plenty of great options at Glen-Hills. Whether it be a sport or club. Go get involved! Find a club that resembles who you are and want to be. Thanks for reading.

7th Grade

Survey Says…Written by: Anonymous 7th Grade Student

We were swinging on swings on the playground. I asked my classmates what they liked most about our school. Some said that they liked being with their friends. It was probably the most popular answer. I wasn’t surprised. What did surprise me was that many said they liked the teachers, even though they gave out a lot of work and were strict. I think, if I’m being honest, us seventh graders like coming to school, learning new things and being around our teachers. We spend a lot of time with our teachers and friends. Probably more time with them than with our family during the school year. It was nice to hear that so many students feel like our school, Glen Hill Middle School, is a good place to be. Not perfect, but good for kids. This is my fourth year at Glen Hills. I, too, believe that during my time here as a middle school student, it has been a place where I feel safe, loved, respected and heard. At least most of the time. I am hoping that our school can be a good place for all kids. I know that is sometimes hard to do when kids need certain things. Still, I believe that if we work together and hard enough, we can make sure that everyone feels accepted, loved, as if they have friends, and want to come back every single day. I do. I hope others do too.

Social Studies

In social studies, the 7th grade scholars spent the majority of this week and the last, reviewing the skills that they have learned so far in our Geography Skills Unit. Some of their learning includes knowing the elements and components of reading a map as well as the map skills needed to identify the differences between thematic, physical, and political maps. For this map project, scholars were able to sketch what their own country would look like and had to include thematic, physical, and political elements to their countries. 6th Grade

The 6th graders have been working hard on getting in the groove of their 6th grade year. We are proud of their growth so far and are excited to see where they go.

In math, students are learning about expanding their knowledge on ratio tables, unit rates and finding out the value per one. Students recently started a new unit learning about units of measurement and conversions. The students really enjoy this unit because it’s directly related to real-life such as making recipes, measuring for a new couch or figuring out dimensions for an area!

In Science the students are working on lighting and matter. The unit is wrapping up and will have an assessment next week.

In ELA students have wrapped up their very first unit. This unit was all about personal narratives. They will be starting a reading unit next week.

In Social Studies students are working on mapping and cardinal directions.

5th Grade

Hi my name is Victoria, this week in reading we are doing our Theme packet and in book club we are answering questions about our book that we are reading. We have designated pages we have to read everyday depending on how many pages we have in the whole book. The highest amount of pages that you have to read is 27 pages & the lowest you have read is 15 pages a day. Please remember to log your reading minutes and turn in the reading log at the end of the month!

In Social Studies we are learning about The NorthEast Region, and how The Appalachian Trail goes over 2,000 miles from Maine to Georgia. We are also getting ready to start our North Eastern States Scrapbook. For the scrapbook we are all going to choose a North Eastern State to research and create a scrapbook of our findings for each 5th grade homeroom.

In math class we just finished our first unit by taking our test last Friday. We are moving on to Unit 2, Fractions and Decimals! We started by talking about money and how we can use money fractions and decimals to solve addition fraction problems.

For Science we are finishing our research on a scientist that we got to pick. WE are making a slide presentation to share what we found with everyone.

Now to the answer to our Geography Question: How many states make up the Northeast region???

The Answer Is…….9!!!!!!

Updates From The Music Department

Concert Season has Officially Begun!

7th and 8th Grade Orchestras joined forces with Maple Dale, Bayside and Nicolet to get a successful performance at Glen Hills on Tuesday October 17th. Caregivers and friends of scholars were able to observe the rehearsal process before the concert as well. While the majority of the time what the community sees is the product of a polished concert, the process of rehearsing music for weeks and even months involves full participation from everyone in the ensemble. It was great to show even just a snippet of that work to the audience. As music teachers, we play the long game and teach scholars the importance of long term goal setting and having a growth mindset the entire time we are preparing for a community performance. Even though the next concert might not be until January, scholars need to be rehearsing and giving 100% effort from day 1. We also remind scholars that on day 1 we don’t expect all the right notes or rhythms, otherwise there would be no growth. It is difficult to see that far into the future, but if we remind scholars that we can grow and take it day by day, we will see a successful end result in a fabulous performance. World Language

Article by: Maestra Swenson, Spanish Teacher

Spanish students are working hard at creating their own content.

6th grade is wrapping up their introductions unit. They will be doing a short written piece introducing a person. They have the option to draw a picture or bring a picture from home. This project will be happening next week.

7th grade is working hard on conjugating verbs. Conjugation is the act of changing a verb to match who or what is doing the action. This allows students the first steps to language independence. There are a number of websites like studyspanish.com that allow students to practice these skills.

8th grade is also working on conjugating all 3 types of regular verbs. They are going to be narrating what happens in their classes. They have been generating Spanish verbs to describe their classroom activities.

Lastly, all 3 grades will be studying the cultural significance of Día de los Muertos next week. We will be diving into what people do during these special days, how the activities connect to their culture, and how culture shapes beliefs.

Updates from Physical Education

We are getting ready to shift into new units soon! We are wrapping up our swimming, soccer/ speedball, flag football, and tennis units this week.

Our next rotation will include jump roping, wrestling games, basketball, and tumbling/gymnastics.

Looking ahead, we will also be doing our rollerskating unit starting after Thanksgiving. We will skate November 27th until December 21st.

Reminders

Please remind students to bring PE clothes and shoes. Jackets and long pants are recommended for days that we go outside.

PTO Fundraiser

Hello Parkway and Glen Hills Families!

The Stone Creek/Rishi Tea fundraiser is back, this year with the addition of O&H Kringles - because what goes better with coffee than that?! We hope you will take advantage of purchasing some great local products for yourselves and for gifts during this holiday season to support the Parkway/Glen Hills PTO. You also have the option of ordering your coffee with the custom label pictured at right, “Panther Pride Blend,” designed by one of our very own Glen Hills moms.

We profit over $7 on each bag of coffee, $1-$10 on a gift card depending on the amount, $1.50 on each tea, $3 on hot cocoa, and around $4 for each Kringle. If each of our children sold just one bag of coffee, we would net around $8000 for our PTO, who continue to work tirelessly and creatively to support our students and staff of Parkway and Glen Hills.

What are we selling?

See the back of the attached order form for full descriptions of the coffee, tea and Kringles available. The custom label is the Cream City Blend (medium roast). Stone Creek, Rishi Tea and O&H Danish Bakery are local to the Milwaukee area and take great pride in who and where their products come from and how they are produced. And don’t forget, we have $10-$100 Stone Creek gift cards available for your personal use or holiday gifting purposes!

How should my customers pay?

With digital payment, cash or a check MADE OUT TO YOU. You then make out a single check to the PTO (see below) when you submit your order.

Where/When do I submit orders?

Submit all orders online or to the Parkway or Glen Hills office no later than 3 pm on November 13, 2023.

2) TOTAL AMOUNT of sales in cash and/or check made out to Parkway/Glen Hills PTO.

Where do I pick up my orders?

Pick up (for Glen Hills families also) at Parkway on December 2nd, 2023 from 9 am-12 pm. If you are unable to pick up at this time/date, reach out to me for an alternate arrangement.

What’s in it for me?

In addition to quality, local products, and if you sell $100 worth of products, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a coffee gift basket! If Glen Hills families sell over $1000, there will be a school wide incentive of a pajama and movie day!
