For the past three weeks, seventh graders have been enamored in research and data collection. We have decided whether or not we believe kids should compete in competitive sports. Research from experts have provided compelling facts from both perspectives. After reviewing the content, students have made their stance. This week we are composing our first draft of six paragraphs that express our claim, reasons, evidence, counterargument, and conclusion. The work has been challenging, yet we believe we are up to the task. Within a week, we hope to be ready to publish our final essays.
Math
Currently in accelerated math we are finishing our first part of our unit on linear relationships. We are taking a test on this on Wednesday, February 19th. Students learned how to find solutions to linear equations, write equations in slope intercept form and in standard form, and work on their graphing skills. After this unit, we will be working on our Black history month project for 2 days talking about how proportional relationships are visible in the movie "Six Triple Eight". When we finish the project, to finish up the trimester, we will continue our work on linear relationships with systems of equations. Students will practice solving systems of equations using graphing, substitution, and elimination. We will have a test on systems of equations on Thursday, March 6th.
In 7th grade math, we are currently working on our black history month projects. This project shows the proportional relationship that is visible in the movie "Six Triple Eight" when talking about how much mail was being gone through daily. When we finish the project, we will start our work on our next unit which is all about equations. Students are going to be learning how to solve equations in one variable by using inverse operations. We will be testing on this prior to the end of the trimester on Friday, March 7th. Students will also have an opportunity to show what skills they have mained over this year by doing an end of the trimester test the following week on Wednesday, March 12th. This test will cover the priority standards that we have touched on this year which would be work on proportional relationships, operations with integers, and solving equations in one variable. This end of the trimester test will not be able to negatively affect students' grades, only positively. If students do well on this test, it will replace their lowest test grade in IC.
Social Studies
Learning Objectives: This week, the 7th grade will analyze a series of documents regarding primary and secondary sources focusing on the development of a trading policy put into place between multiple nations. The 7th grade scholars will develop a claim regarding this policy (NAFTA’s impact on Mexico), as well as gather evidence and consider various sides of the prompt/essay question. After analyzing a series of 6 documents, the students this week will pick their documents that support their claim in a Document Based Essay and begin drafting their rough drafts. The rubric will be reviewed during class time and students will be able to use the mentor text for assistance.
Essay question: How Has NAFTA Impacted Mexico? Final essay’s will be due on

Science
We are committed to our Science Fair projects! The work has been arduous, but we are finding ways to be innovative, creative, and resilient. Testing our theories has been humbling in some cases, while eye-opening in others. Partnerships with peers have taught us to be cognizant of the various needs and learning styles others may possess, and being willing to incorporate them into our experimentation and analysis. These projects have taught us the value of science in solving the problems of everyday life and setting the groundwork for spectacular showcases of scientific breakthroughs. We look forward to showcasing our hard work soon!
Reminders:
Scholars should begin bringing in their science fair project materials. Please have all materials dropped off in the science classroom ASAP. This will ensure that all students can begin their investigations.
