ELA
This week we have started a new unit, The Art of Argument. This unit is designed to teach students the art of debating through published works. The focus is on expressing one’s opinion by presenting a claim, reasons, and supporting evidence. While it is important to take a stance on a particular issue, it is equally important to study literature, to scope the experts’ research to see all points of view. The topic: Should Kids Participate in Competitive Sports? We have started the process of researching and will choose a position soon!
Math
In accelerated math, we just finished up our unit on inequalities, expressions and equations. This week we are starting our unit on linear relationships. We will first do some review on proportional relationships and then will move into non proportional relationships. Students will learn about slope intercept form and positive and negative sports. When we are done with the unit, we will be doing a project for Black History Month.
In 7th grade math we are finishing up our unit on rational number arithmetic. Students have been learning to do all operations with positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions. After our test on Friday, we will be doing a project for Black History Month. After students find out their group, one person will need to bring a poster.
Social Studies
This week, the 7th graders will analyze a series of documents regarding primary and secondary sources focusing on the development of a trading policy put into place between multiple nations. Before the 7th grade scholars develop a claim regarding this free trade policy (NAFTA), they will gather evidence and consider various sides of the prompt/essay question. Essay question: Is NAFTA good for Mexico?
Science
We are excited to update you on the progress of our students' Science Fair projects. The class has now entered the experiment phase, and many students are actively working on gathering data and testing their hypotheses. However, some students have yet to bring in the necessary materials for their projects. Please remind your child to purchase and bring any remaining materials to the science classroom as soon as possible to stay on track.
As the projects can be both challenging and time-consuming, we encourage you to connect with your child each day to reflect on their progress and discuss their findings. These discussions can help clarify ideas, address challenges, and keep them motivated as they work through the process.
Although participation in the regional Science Fair at Nicolet on Saturday, February 22nd, is optional, students who choose to enter will receive extra credit. I’ve asked students to share their interest in attending, but some are unsure about potential scheduling conflicts. If your child plans to participate in the fair, please email me as soon as possible so I can submit their names.
At this time, Nicolet has not yet released the exact time of the fair, but in the past, it has run from 9 AM to 11 AM. I will notify you immediately once more details become available.
Thank you for your continued support!
Reminders:
Scholars should begin bringing in their science fair project materials. Please have all materials dropped off in the science classroom ASAP. This will ensure that all students can begin their investigations.
