Eighteen years ago, the founders of Genesee Community Charter School considered the structures needed to create a supportive and growth-oriented environment for teachers and their students. Staffing structures, grade-level loops, and significant hours of professional development all were considered. Today, we are proud to say that we have remained true to these commitments while also taking stock in our collegial growth and accountability practices.
Over the years, we have refined our professional development practices to individual goals while fostering small professional learning communities that support accountability. Additionally, GCCS was awarded a Federal Dissemination Grant that expanded our collegial collaboration and development in a partnership with a local district school. Current staff culture and climate surveys reveal the overall dedication to professional growth. As a result, the last five years have shown a continuum for professional improvement in service of student achievement.
As a mentor school in the EL Education network, it has been our honor to help bring new schools online and part of the EL Education family. Our work with Welby Community School (Denver, CO) and Old Sturbridge Academy (Sturbridge, MA) allowed our staff to share best practices with new learning communities and pushed us to reflect on our own work. We developed a Mentor School Committee which met monthly and communicated via phone conference with our mentees. Staff visited Old Sturbridge Village twice to support expedition planning and classroom management and we met with members of Welby's staff during EL Education site seminars and national conferences. We are looking forward to working with our newest partner, Flint Cultural Center Academy in Flint, MI, over the next two years to strengthen their capacity as an EL Education school.
